Within our 2016 SHOT report, we wrote about the new Savage A22 Magnum rifle and ammunition. Since the Show, we were able to piece together some video and images which give you a closer look at the new rifle and ammunition. The rifle itself is based on the platform used with the Savage A17 Semi-Auto rifle (.17HMR). Savage is using the same delayed blow-back action design, 10-round magazine, adjustable Accu-Trigger, as well as the other features found in the A17.
The CCI A22 Magnum ammunition is “optimized” for the new A22 rifle, but it can be shot in other .22 Magnum rifles as well. This new ammunition is loaded with a 35 grain “Game Point”, which is basically a jacketed HP, with lead filling the hole, creating the “point”. The ammo is listed at 2100 feet per second.
Although we were able to shoot this rifle at the Media Range Day, the time spent with it did not give us enough information to give our opinion on it at this point. However, because it is based on the A17, a rifle we enjoyed shooting, we are expecting this to be the same. With that being said, there are a lot of different types of .22 Magnum ammunition out there, so we hope that this rifle functions well regardless of what it is shooting.
With the release of the A22 Magnum rifle and ammunition, many are speculating that there may be a .17WSM rifle coming soon in this platform. We don’t know if this is a future project in the Savage engineering queue, but for now we are very glad to see another semi-auto .22 Magnum rifle becoming available to varminters!
