The Howa M1100 .17HMR bolt action rimfire rifle is the latest .17 caliber rimfire, now available from Howa USA / Legacy Sports International.  We got our hands on one and, in our typical fashion, we used the heck out of it both at the range and in the field while hunting ground squirrels.  All of us here at Varminter got to hunt with it and really put it to the test.  This overview and ground squirrel hunt report has been a year in the making.  It is a ground squirrel removal machine!

This is a true story. The names may have been changed to protect the innocent. But seriously, one of the coolest things I've ever gotten to participate in with a wild critter! By the way, if you'd like to see what this story would be if written by Artificial Intelligence, hit this link to read the Fiction version of this event: https://www.varminter.com/my-new-ground-squirrel-hunting-buddy-whiskers-the-weasel/

Rockchucks are not prolific breeders like ground squirrels. Therefore, we are always careful about how many we take out of our hunting areas. This spot held only a breeding pair and no young ones. My hunting partner and I agreed that we would pass on shooting these and leave the area alone for a couple of years so they can (hopefully) repopulate the area. Even though most people think we are blood thirsty hunters, with no regard to animal numbers, it is far from the truth. When you see us with piles of animals, it's due to hunting numerous areas that hold large numbers of varmints. This is especially true with ground squirrels, whose numbers can be astonishing and very foreign to those who have never hunted the Western USA.

We all remember the release of the new line of bolt-action centerfire rifles, the Model 600 Alpha, Lux, Range and Trail.  This exciting release included a rifle that would have interchangeable barrels and bolt-heads!  However, once the rifles hit the shelves, CZ-USA dropped a bombshell... They issued a recall for the Model 600 line, where they would permanently attach the barrel to the receiver and the future of an interchangeable barrel and bolt-head change, went up in smoke.  Soon, a rifle that was bound to be one of the most innovative options in the bolt-action centerfire world, turned into a moderately priced rifle that was a potential throw-away if you shot out the barrel.  I purchased one of the first CZ Model 600 Alpha rifles in the .224 Valkyrie cartridge.  Although the original purchase was made for the reasons listed above, I felt that it was time to show what this rifle could do and ask the question, "What Happened?".
