Cottontail

The most popular small game animal in North America. There are eight species of the rabbit, from the Order Lagomorpha. Cottontail rabbits inhabit thick bushy areas such as coulees, river bottoms, sage-brush plains and abandoned farmsteads. Cottontail rabbits have a brown colored fur coat which remains that color year-round. Adults may weigh over 2 pounds each. Mating begins in February and ends after the summer. On average, five young are born per litter and three or more litters can be raised every year. Sexual maturity is reached early at two to three months of age.
