My 16 year old granddaughter has really take an interest in target shooting with me and would like to try P dog hunting with us next year. She likes my 17hmr and 22lr but not really thrilled with the 223 and 22 250. I was thinking of perhaps the 17 hornet or 204 ruger for more distance. Any suggestions? She is smaller around 5 3'' and 110 lbs. Would like to find something she could handle.

Don't sell the .22 Hornet short either.

When you say not thrilled with 223 and 22-250 were these heavy barreled varmint class rifles?

I shoot a lot of ground squirrels with a 17 HMR, and 223 from a 22" sport weight barreled Axis. My 11 year old grandaughter likes the 17 HMR best but also can shoot the axis equally well. The guns she does not like are a heavy barreled 223, and the 22-250.  She says they are front heavy and hard to get them on target.  She also does not like the AR in 223.

Good luck finding the right one, But see what it is about the 22 and 17 HMR that she likes! It might be that she just likes hanging out with Granpa! Good Luck, DR

Good advice, DR! Maybe a .17 WSM would be good for her also.

So, what's the final outcome, muddyfox?
