I am new to the world of forms.

I am looking for information on which ammunition to use in my 17 HMR that doesn't destroy the meet when hunting rabbits.

I try to take only head shots but the rabbit doesn't cooperate all the time.

Does anyone have experience in this type of hunting?

I shoot a Cooper 57-M with a tight chamber Lilja heavy sporter barrel.

Depending on the manufacture and which bullets I pull out of the box of ammunition the rifle will shoot anywhere from .25" to .75" at 100 yards in my underground range.

Most of the time it will stay under 1/2"

CCI makes a couple types of 17hmr ammo that might work for you, or at least much better than vmax if you are trying to save the meat.  They have a game point round that has a tiny hollowpoint tip, and they also have a full metal jacket round.  The gamepoints work quite well and group a bit better than the vmax in my bolt rifle.  FMJ might do well too and should do the least damage, but not sure how quick they'd put down a rabbit.

I have used both the game points and FMJ from CCI. The FMJ's did the least meat damage. Good Luck DR
