anone use v max for shooting predators with.i used to shoot an 87 grain v my xthrough my 243 for red fox incredible knockdown but massive exit wounds. i am now using a 6 mmppc and can get 65 grain v max for it .as little fur damage as possible would be nice but really im looking for a bullet that drops em on the spot obviously with good shot placement.would you stick with the v max or is there something better.thanks

I use them more than any other type bullet in the .204 and .224. calibers. They are definitely effective killers but at times, with poor shot placement mostly, they can be hard on fur if you're saving that. Generally with a good accurate lung shot they leave a tiny entrance with no exit. I have never used them in the 6mm diameter.
I'd think a more heavily jacketed deer type bullet might be a better choice for saving fur?

That's all I use.....40 grn f/ 22 hornet, 58 & 75 grns f/243, 120's in 7mm08 and 55's in my 223 WSSM, drops them instantly at all distances. I agree with Red on the heavier jaketed bullets if shooting for fur...slow em down a little........ Of course if you make all head shots then you don't have to worry about the fur damage

I use a 52 gr sierra match H.P. in .224 and 60 gr H.P. in 6 mm not as much fur damage compared to the plastic tip bullets.

Shoot a fox in the head with a 6mm- 87, 75, 65, or 58 V-MAX and you will have a fur with no head. Not prefered by the fur buyer around here(what little it's worth anyway). Not good if you want to get it stuffed either.

I shot over 50 coyotes this past season...ALL with 32 gr VMax out of my 204.
Very little damage, one shot kills and no exits!!!
But i disagree with Red, I skip the lung shots and go for full frontal chest shots!
I have a new 17 Rem and plan to use 25 gr Vmaxs out of it this fall.
Just my 2 cents!!!

I'm going to set that as a goal for this next calling season. I'll take the little Model 7 243 out here by the house and call a fox in and put a 65 V Max between his eyes or there abouts. Photos will be presented immediately after returning when this takes place.

I may put it in a box and mail it to the Skypilot
No not really!
I bet it makes a nice hole though or maybe that would be called empty space if it's just missing.

I've had mixed results with that shot. All were DEAD, some have had the tiny entrance you descibe but if the shot goes just a little wide....

either way, I'm not saving fur so dead is dead to me. Am interested to hear how you like the 17

Yes sir, I use 'em. When I'm not lugging my long range .308, I carry a Ruger Mini-14 for coyotes. Works great here in Ohio. Light, fast handling, and lots of fire power for short to medium range work.
I emptied a 5 shot clip at a spinning yote, and hit it 3 times with the V-Max. Believe me, I did not want to lug that mess back to the truck! They're like little hand grenades going really fast, and the frag on impact.
I swear by Nosler ballistic tips in my 30 caliber, but am satisfied with the vmax in the .223.

Red,
I haven't opened any up like that by shooting them in the chest, but I have had a couple drop like rocks lay there for a few seconds and then get up and bolt!
Yeah, I'm reved to try the 17 this winter!!

I use the 65 grain v-max in my 243.They work great on quartering shots or face forward shots on coyotes, but put it behind both shoulders and you have a big mess.I dont think they would be verry good on fox,if you want to save the hide.

Hit a red fox from the side thru the pump with my .223 using 50gr. vmax. It was .223 entrance, baseball exit.

A full grown fox is what, about 15 pounds? Just about any 6mm is pretty tough on a little critter like a fox, I doubt, sincerely, that you'll save much fur with any 6mm bullet. One of the most successful fox hunters I know swears by his .22 Hornet, and with 35 VMs,(he doesn't handload), his foxes look pretty good when put on the ground. He also loves the .17 HMR for that kind of work. We don't have many foxes where I hunt, the danged coyotes tend to kill them pretty quick, but about anything more than a .222 is pretty tough on 'em, they just aren't big enough to stop a big old 6mm bullet (that being a relative thing!).

I like the Vmax's. I use 50 grainers in my 223 and actually the 52 grain Amax in my 22-250. The only difference (so ive been told is that the Amax is considered a match grade bullet. The reason I use hornaday now is because when I used the Nosler ballistic tips, every so often I would find a deformed bullet in the box. This was with their .224 caliber bullets. I felt like their quality control was lacking so I tried the Hornadays. Haven't found a deformed bullet yet, and they work great. As far as performance/explosiveness goes, I'm not sure there's much difference between any of the plastic tipped bullets I've tried. That includes Blitzkings, V'max, A'max, or Ballistic tips. Maybe just pick your favorite color. You can have red tips, green tips, or orange tips depending on manufacturer. lol.
