Ok i was asked to have a written description and some pics of how to cut those long ass marlin clips down, now with 2 coils cut from the clip spring it operates flawlesss for 3 rounds taking more of the spring out you can have up to 5 rounds in the shortened clip.
Now as all marlin owners know the clip digs into your back and is really to many rounds for what i use it for , you can just use this clip for hunting and still use a 7 round for target shooting or whatever , its a good tip and i will give pics and descriptions of whats going on in each pic

so here we go smile.gif

Ok dont respond to this post because there are going to be alot of pics just stay tuned to this post

thanks

Ok this is how you start just have your clip in the gun (easy huh ) biggrin.gif
fireball
STEP 1.

Ok now there is the release on the back (we all know were this is the pencil points it out )
Now were the release lip is were your finger goes mark there on the clip level were the button starts to angle away from the clip. Now with the mark there go ahead and make a mark on the front of the clip get something i used a mall adjustable square to mark the line , the marlin clip sits in there like at a 10degree angle all your wanting to do is make the line follow the profil of the gun so when your done it looks factory sitting in there .

STEP 2.

Now with the clip marked take it to the vise and now just use a flat head screwdriver or a drift and go from the rear of the clip and tap the base off the clip (NOTE; you might have to take another small flat head to lift the front so you can get it passed the punch ) but i havent had any probs just tapping it out it just snappes out , with the base off youll be able to remove the spring and follower

STEP 3.

Ok now with the base off here is whats in there laugh.gif
fireball
STEP 4.

Ok now with the base and guts out here we go with the fun stuff, time to vise it up and CUT that sucker, I use a air cutter but did this one with a hacksaw its easy on your 1st time
when the cut is made i take it to the bench grinder and level out the cut if its off alittle.
ow use a fine cutting hacksaw blade it easy to cut and make a nice cut also cool.gif
fireball
Step 5.

Ok now with the cut over and the base smoothed its time to make the 6 relief cuts so you can make lips to attach the base back to , you will see were to make the relief cuts in the solid sections, with the hacksaw just cut across the clip making sure there going down the same depth on both sides when making the cuts . Depth on the cuts is alittle over a 1/16" this is plenty for the next step
fireball
STEP 6.

Ok now with the cuts made take a set of needle nose liers and bend the middles of those relief cut sections thios is giving the lip for the base to reattach, as you can see in this pic and the last you can see if you look close just were to make the 6 cuts
Noiw with the lips bent out this is were the fitting of the base is they might have to be smoothed and grinded back just alittle so the base fits up on it but before that youll need to mod the base to accept the new lips you just made
fireball
Step 7.

Ok here is the base mod that will have to be done , take the small flat head screwdriver and get under the lip of the base cap your just wanting to open them up alittle but so it slides smoother on the just moded clip body , do both sides of the base cap
fireball
Step 8.

Ok now with the clip body done and the base cap opened alittle tis time just to fit the 2 pieces
just slide them back together if all is right there will be tension you want that
But you might have to fit the little tabs a few times so the base slides on once the base cap is on take it on and off a few times so they get a feel for each other refer to step 2 and just take it on and off , next we can cut the spring but i didnt take a pic of me fitting the base but just do what i said youll see the finished result here in a few
fireball
STEP 9.

Ok now we can cut the spring now there are the 3 round ones and 5 but i perfer the 3 round
I just cut out 2 links now cut them off the bottom of the pring not the top the top has to fit the follower perfectly just use needle nose with the cutter or a cutter of some kind
fireball
A tip for step 9 when cutting the spring, cut in the bend of the spring this will leave a level turn so the spring still thinks is sitting flat try if you can to leave some of the turn it helps in reinstall of the spring in the clip and the base cap install (doesnt let the spring slip out on reinstall)
fireball
Step 10.

Home free! ok its time to put this mother together
Make sure the follower goes in the right way there is only 1 way , and just insert the spring making sure the cut spring is on the base and the follower part of the spring is under the spring just slide the base cap on and it will fit in the groove from the base cap on your lips you made in STEP 5 the base cap should have been fitted before this step so it goes easy together in this part
fireball
Step 11

Ok now the base is on you can opt to do this step if your clip is loose but if you took the time to fit the base to your lips you made it should be tight but if in doubt do this step.
all your wanting to do here is what they do at the factory is just take your trusty flathead and just go down the sides of the base cap and tape the groove down to make a tight fit to your lips under the groove just security if you like + you get the fine factory look just be caefull you dont scratch that bluing biggrin.gif
fireball
Ok now you have a 3 round clip now if you want the 5 round just cut some more spring it should be another coil out and youll have 5

Im not a gunsmith just a tinkerer so i guess ill have to add im not responsible for this mod just letting you know the basics of how to do this do it if you will you will like it

Ok now that that legal crap is over have fun now ill just show a couple of more pics

GOOD LUCK and let me know if it works for ya

I'm new to the forum, but I was searching the net for info on my newly aquired marlin 917 and I stubled across this mod. I tried it and it was a lot easier than I had expected... usually I'm all thumbs.
here is my rifle now... can't even see the clip! (or feel it in my back while on the sling)
It works great... I have another clip I use for the range with seven rounds and use the 3 round for hunting now. Thanx for the great info.
Ok apparently the site cant handle the newly modified pitcure of my rifle... sorry I'll try and post later

I had never thought about bending the tabs on the clips. As far as mag. rattle, I had applied strips of electric tape to both sides that touch the receiver. But, I will try this one. Does anyone know about other good mods to do to the 917v. I am mostly looking for low-$ ideas. I want to do a before-mod-and-after-mod accuracy test on my beloved little 917v.

Nice mod. I carry 2 magazines in my rear pocket when I am carrying my weapon, so nothing digging into my back. I just put 5 rounds in my 7 round mags, and that is good for me. Does the mag length really bother that many shooters? Just fishin' for opinions, the length doesn't bother me at all. grincamo.gif
