This happened on 11-1-09. I've had to use Diane's little laptop so I didn't post it much. But I have a new computer now so here goes.

Have you ever heard how the big ones can just appear or vanish as if they are ghosts?? Then it's like they were never even there & you know you weren't hallucinating!! Well I'll try to re-create things as they happened. I'm still a little bubbly over all this. biggrincamo.gif

I was setting there all strapped in,, safety 1st biggrincamo.gif ,, when suddensly this very nice buck literally jumps out at me from no where. He came in from my left & I literally had milliseconds to react. His head was very low as if trailing a doe,, which we didn't see,, & he was on the move. A fast trot but not a run. I had a lane to my left,, which he crossed at the speed of light,, & the one directly in front of us. This was where it got interesting. My brain overrode my body & immediately I had to hit the brakes on this one!!! I pounded him in the left front shoulder & knocked him to the ground. He thrashed for a minute or so then got up & yep,, you guessed it,, VANISHED!!!! I just wanted to yuckcamo.gif now!! Luckily Diane was with me & told me not to worry about it none. We would find it as she knew exactly where I hit it & she knew it was a good hit. Then she called my Brother & BIL to help us find him. We looked for about 45 minutes & it was real dark so we just quit for the night.

Well I went back out Monday AM to no avail. And I know it was a hard hit as I felt it too. Here are the only pics I got out of this. They aint much but maybe they tell the story better than I could.

Any ideas on what went wrong for me on this??

BTW-- Diane & I are fine. Nobody got hurt in any way. With that being said all humorous posts are Welcome & I SHOULD have my truck back this Friday!!

Glad you and Diane are safe! scares the Heck outta ya when you hit them buggers!

You sure it wasn't a reindeer though. It could've been hit, and flew! He would've left no tracks! And he's probably being mended up now in the North Pole with Santy Clause!... That's my only guess biggrincamo.gif

Bummer, glad y'all are OK tho.

"when suddensly this very nice buck literally jumps out at me from no where."

had the same thing happen a few years ago, tho it was a doe and she did about $5,000 damage. There was no driving away from that one. The deer got the worst of it, killed instantly.

I'm surprised more folks haven't replied with their deer/driving experiences. We're all good. biggrincamo.gif

Well I've been only in one car-deer accident. We were headed home from a family gathering in Fargo, headed home on I94. My older sister was a new(ish) driver and absolutely SMOKED a deer with our family Dodge Caravan. The deer had cleared the whole set of left lanes and crossed the grass median. The deer caugth the van in mid-windshield. It was truly insane as i remember seeing glass flying the interior of the van in slow motion. Luckily there was a patrolmen that was parked under an overpass maybe 200 yards behind us. He said the incident was terribly to watch as he figured my sis would swerve and roll the van ending with multiple casualties. She hit the deer and just immediately braked. The officer was there within seconds to guide us to the side of the road. 5 people in the vehicle and 5 walked out. The worst injuries were small glass cuts on our faces.

I still give my sister crap as anytime I am riding with her and see deer eyes shining I calmly say: "resist the urge" If you want to kill a deer that bad again, I'll buy you a rifle. It's cheaper.

First, I'm glad everyone is OK smile.gif

Since you were not able to locate the "perp", terminal ballistic performance calculations will not be accurate, but my initial thought is to go with a lighter projectile at a greater speed freakedcamo.gif

I never hit a deer...somehow i always managed to stop or evade as they seem to sometimes try to commit suicide screamcamo.gif But i saw an accident once that was crazy. After retiring from the Army i went to work for the NC Division of prisons. I worked as a guard for 8 years. I was transporting an inmate to a state hospital for treatment one morning. It was a two hour drive and we started off at about 4am. I was travelling a pig trail through the country and a big diesel ford with a horse trailer full of horses was about 100 feet in front of me. About ten deer exploded from the left side of the road and attacked that big rig and trailer. A couple got run over out right, one or two got hung up between the truck and trailer and another one or two bounced off the trailer. It was a mess. Some were DRT and some were still kicking. That driver sustained alot of vehicle and trailer damage and to say he was pissed is an understatement. Because i was transporting a state felon, i could only stop to see if anyone was injured and then to radio it in to the state police. I did leave the driver a thermos of coffee and a couple of sandwichwes which he seemed to appreciate as he was pretty sshook up. there was lots of venison to be processed at that accident.

Dang Glen! I'm glad everyone is ok, big guns are awesome, but a 31,073,000 gr. truck is slightly overkill (4,439lbs)!!! Next time consider a .50 lol At least you get to re-use those big bullets, I'd hate to see the reload cost for what you're shootin that deer with. biggrincamo.gif

Well we know that you are all safe that is the good news.

Personaly, I prefer a double barrel-ed Ford. We got better pentration. The result was a better smear-of-deer. The deer and the Ford were useless. I'm thankful I don't regulary drive in north west Colorado. The last time I drove from Craig to Grand Junction there were several elk that had been taged by trucks (or cars).

Hey folks if the Bunny-Hugger crowd were really out to protect critters they could place animal proof fences along all paved roads. Just think of all of the varmints that get tatooed by GoodYear. How much better for these critters to be the reviever of a plastic pointed bit of metal.
I think that we should observe a moment-of-silence each time we pass a woodchuck or a Pdog that has stoped to pray by the road side.
