Since it's been pretty slow around here, instead of just posting the final results I'll write the whole gory tale a bit at a time, just so everyone will have a good reason to drop in here and hang out.
Even if the reason is just to laugh at me.
The good news is that I finally, grudgingly, shelled out the cash to buy a digital camera, so there will be pictures as soon as I get a photobucket account and figure out how to do the whole camera -> computer -> internet sequence.
The bad news is that I did not fire a shot at a varmint all summer. The enormous, fat groundhog living in my landlord's barn about 75 yards away doesn't bother to run when I come outside.
