As mentioned in an earlier thread, I have had a 1948 Marlin Model 39A in the works for a little while. Well, it came home the other day. The butt stock was a replacement fashioned from a Model 336 stock and the inner magazine tube was missing.

Other than those shortcomings, the rifle is like new. It is even a bit stiff on the action and sports flawless "Ballard rifled" barrel.

I took out to the range the other day and even in a Montana breeze it grouped well at 25 yards using Aguila HVHP ammo.

It was under $300 and I couldn't resist.

Does anybody think there is hope for me? My Marine buddy thinks I'm a lost cause..... unsure.gif

I bet that rifle has sent a lot of varmints into the void. smile.gif

I'd wager you're correct on that count! I think that's part of the attraction, you know? A few years back I bought a C.G.Haenel factory-built 1888 Mauser Sporter chambered for 8x57J. It was in a pawn shop in Billings, MT. The finish was almost gone to the point of looking gray. The stock had a small crack but the finish was there- though scarred and dented. The bore and action were, however, immaculately maintained. All I could think was that this was once someones prized hunting rifle and now it had come to a low state of affairs in a pawn shop with a yellowed $165 price tag hanging from the trigger guard. I bought it, made a new leaf for the express sights, worked up some really good deer-stomping cast bullet loads for it, and plan to put it back to the hunt ASAP. Every time I look at it I wonder about the stories it might tell if it were able.~AMMOe

Thanks! I'll still carry my 1976 Model 39 when I fancy a lever gun. Too many rabbits have fallen under it's direction to leave it behind. My son has a 1948 Marlin also. I restocked it last year and took a pic along side my "beater". (His is the nice one on the left...) ~AMMOe

I didn't think it was possible for anyone to accomplish, but, let's face it....you MAY have too many guns.

My ex wife probably thought so! biggrin.gif ~AMMOe

Actually, I cut and pasted that comment (about another guy's new custom rifle) from another website. However, the feeling Dave gave voice to, is about the same as mine towards that Marlin of yours. freakedcamo.gif I'm just not as articulate...

is it possible to have to many guns?

nice looking rifle Ammo
I try and stay away from the pawnshops around here a lot of nice guns sitting in them.

I know the feeling! If I was rich, I wouldn't find a single gun to buy. It's only when I'm dirt poor that the deals arise. I may have to sell my 257 Roberts to make up the slack.... ohmy.gif ~AMMOe

And yes, you ARE a lost cause... tonguecamo.gif

Got your e-mail BTW, may have a blank already as it turns out...

Uncle Bob is yours and I'll toss in a couple of hundred Speer 100 grn BTSP and some brass to boot. I'm keeping the Burris, though. You're on your own for glass! wink.gif Never bonded with that rifle though I did get a seriously accurate cast bullet load for it. Not surprisingly, it's the same bullet as the 25-20.

Yeah. I need help. I did find a rifle on GB.com for $119 + shipping.... or at least that's where the auction stands right now. I am anxious to get started. Hope you can find that blank! ohmy.gif I'll be on crutches in 5 weeks! ~AMMOe

If only Marlin chambered a .22 mag in that gorgeous Model 39. Henry's got a nice looker, but it's not a Marlin 39 screamcamo.gif

Thanks. I'm still wringing it out. I'd like to get a receiver sight for it but have to wait a bit. I have a tang sight that will fit but don't feel like it. sad.gif They always get in the (my...) way for regular shooting.~AMMOe
