Glen
We don't see them as much as some folks do so I took Diane out to get a couple pics. We were about 350yds away on 15x zoom with a Sony CyberShot on a tripod.

I love watching Bald Eagles. We have a pair the nest on my neighbors property so I get to see them often.
Glen
Around here it's hit & miss. We have the habitat for them & the food & water sources but they just don't stay around very long.

AWESOME!!!

Where was this taken? I've heard and seen signs that say there are eagles in the Big Bear Lake area but I've never seen one.
JimT.
Glen, Pymatuning Lake has a few pairs nesting.
Glen
Hi Jim. This was at a small lake here in Harrison Co about 1hr due West of Pittsburgh. Tappan Lake. I've heard about the pairs at Pymatuning also. I've heard reports of 3 pair there. We also have a dam here about 20 minutes from the house that is used for flood control. It's the Beach City Dam & there are reports of a nesting pair there as well. Right behind my house is a big gravel pit. There is a pair there as well. I tried to get pics of one that had a rabbit on the ground in my backyard but failed at that attempt. laugh.gif But I tried!! biggrincamo.gif

Where is the Big Bear Lake??
JimT.
Big Bear Lake is about two hours plus from L. A. and northeast.

Glen, I grew up in Beaver, PA at the intersection of the Beaver and Ohio Rivers. Today they have peregrine falcons nesting in Pittsburgh on the high rise buildings and on the Monaca-Rochester toll bridge. I can't wait to hear they have nesting eagles in the area.
Glen
I've heard about those falcons. It would be neat to get those pics too. We're trying to find this Eagle out where we can get some closer pics of it. I wonder how well those two birds could live together. Seems one might drive the other out.

Here along the Mississippi River from St Louis to the Iowa line we are seeing lots of the big birds each winter. Now some are hanging around to nest. Once last winter during a streach of global warming when the river was frozen a passing grain barge and tug boat broke open a streach. I counted six birds standing on the ice by the open water. Two more were sitting on the top of the bridge while others were flying over head. I fear that with the coming of global worming the great birds won't need to flee the ice covered waters and head south for the winter. I sure enjoy watching them.

Thanks Glen for that picture of another the worlds beatiful raptors. biggrincamo.gif Raptors covers the big end of the eagle spectrum due to the type and the way they deploy their talons. Be glad you got the photo of that beauty, because if memory serves me correctly, those birds are an endagered species. It wasnt long ago the Periguine falcon was in the same boat. The thing that saved that bird was the banning of DDT.
Glen
We feel fortunate to have gotten those pics AZZA. It's been a long time since we've caught anymore to take pics of. The Bald Eagle is probably due to come off the ES list if it hasn't already. Out West they have many many more Eagles than we do.
Red
I see them regularly around here. Particularly near lock and dam sites along the Mississippi.
Glen
Red-- I've read on other Forums the same thing about the Eagles & the Mississippi. Seems they enjoy the scenery of the mighty river all along it.

Beautiful Bird Glen. While in Alaska on training they were of course a common site. Glad they are making their way back home for our enjoyment. The racoons got into a couple bags of garbage in the back of my truck a couple days ago. The smell brought this 'eagle' into my yard to check out what was for breakfast laugh.gif

Glen,

The spot where I've deer hunted for quite a few years during the firearm season has a Bald Eagle nest about 90' high up in a tree. I've hunted all around that tree and see the eagles pretty often. It's a huge nest, maybe the size of a car hood, though I'm not certain it's still active?

The lock and dam sites are ideal fishing for the birds since the water is always open even during extremely cold weather when a lot of water has turned to ice. I imagine injured or dissoriented fish are common in the churning water that would make them easy prey also.
Glen
That would make sense. Plus behind the dam fish get caught in pools when the dam re-opens & the water level drops. We don't see them often around here but they are being seen more often. There is a nesting pair within a 1/4 mile of my house here but we rarely ever get a glimpse of them. I'll see if I can figure out the coordinates for Google Earth & you can see where I'm at plus the huge,, almost big enough to be a lake,, pond behind my house.
Glen
If you use Google Earth type in Addy Polaris Brightwood, Ohio. The pond is just to the left. It's an active gravel pit. I live very close to both Addy's & the pond. I caught one of them in the backyard one afternoon but couldn't get the picture.
AZZA
I'm glad to hear Glen that the Bald Eagle is on the up and up. America without a bald eagle would be like Australia without a single species of Kangaroo or our Wedge Tailed Eagle. Red your a lucky and privelidged person to be able to hunt so close another hunter, even if it is a Bald Eagle. wink.gif
