Hey all. I've been lurking for a long time but just now had something to say. I've come across a Remington 592 in 5mm Craig. Is it still possible to get components for this round? Or, in light of the availability of new ammo, would it be wiser to just have it converted back to 5mm Rimfire Mag? Is the 592 a decent rifle? The asking price is pretty low, but if it's a known clunker I'd rather pass on it.

Check with these guys, several of them have 5mm's, Craig and otherwise, http://www.saubier.com.

What these guys don't know about Craigs, and the others, can't be quantified, it ain't much.............

I have a Craig. Shoots very well but in light of the new Centurion Ordnance offering, converting it to RF would be a good choice. The dies are expensive ($250) and the brass is also a bit costly. I got mine well before the 5mm was reintroduced and did quite a bit of loading for it. With most powders it is a bit of a chore to load for. The small case capacity makes it a "weigh every charge" ordeal. Only Hodgdon's Lil Gun would be relatively trouble free in that respect.

I got a 30 grain bullet to around 2500 fps. That isn't much more than the current rimfire offering. A Bolt head and RF firing pin from Numrich was reasonably priced last time I looked....~AMMOe

ebd10,
I have a 5mm Craig. Fun gun to shoot and a real conversation piece at the range. I bought a spare bolt head, firing pin, and extracter from Numrich. I can convert the rifle back to rimfire any time I want. I would like to try the new 5mm rimfire rounds just for the hell of it. The biggest problem with the rifle is the trigger. It is really bad and does affect the accuracy. if the rifle is cheap enough give Numrich a call and see if they still have the bolt parts.

IIRC, a Rem Model 788 trigger can be fit to the 59X series rifles. Timney still makes them (Brownell's had them last I recall).
