Have been wanting to get a REAL "Thumper" for a while and just about went for an AR-50, but ran across this CZ 550 Safari originally chambered in .458 Win Mag, that had been re-chambered to .458 Lott. Now, just exactly what I am going to do with this beast remains to be discovered......., but it is going to make the trip to Wyoming biggrincamo.gif

I can't find fault with your purchase, it's your money, your choice, your shoulder, and your FUN, so have all you can handle! biggrincamo.gif
Glen
ohmy.gif I hope you don't get stormed Bob!! By the time you get up & walk back a couple steps with the bolt in your hand then shoulder it back closed they might could get to ya!! laugh.gif

Nice lookin rig you got there. That would be for the big p dogs right!! biggrincamo.gif

HAMMER TIME!!

My brother use to have a 458 Win mag. He would shoot 2 feet in front of the woodchuck and let the flying gravel kill them. biggrincamo.gif

Detach your cornea's? LoL AL
skypilotbc
LOL, Al.....what was that deal about "just til I need glasses"...... anim_rofl2.gif

Already wearing bi-focals!

Put a Leupold VX-II 2-7x33 LR Duplex in CZ rings on her and loaded up a batch of 350 gr Hornady RN in 458 Win Mag cases at a "book" value of 2550fps.....after all the small-cal stuff, dumping 78 grains of powder in a case is, shall we say, different freakedcamo.gif
This is to compliment the three boxes of Hornady factory 500gr 458 Lott loads that I have. Got an order in for some more Lott cases.

Gonna be interesting to light the fire under this one:

Promise to take the cam-corder for the first (and maybe last) shot dazedcamo.gif

Hey Bob, I'm LMAO! I meant to say retina but that thing would probably detach your cornea too and a few other things we won't mention! anim_rofl2.gif

Wear a cup and double knot your shoe laces.

You've turned PD shooting into a contact sport!
skypilotbc
Got her to the range today for a quick zero-session......and video of the first shots.
The clip did not transfer very well to my 'putor, but here it is:

Click to see Bob get shook up

Took a few shots to get it zeroed where I wanted it and a few shots with the factory 500 grain stuff off-hand.....something about punishment for old mis-deeds freakedcamo.gif

Will try to get the video thing sorted out--the tape version is a lot clearer and doesn't "skip"

I do, though

Bo ooobbb b dazedcamo.gif
Glen
anim_rofl2.gif Diane said she could shoot that one all day long B tongue.gif B!!! So did you only shoot it a few times because of the punishment or was that all the Focus would haul?? anim_rofl2.gif

Yeah those will get your attention for sure. I think you NEED to take that rig down to Carlsbad & bust a yote with it now for Rocky!! biggrincamo.gif
skypilotbc
What an idea!! I'll swing by New Philly, pick Diane up and we'll head to C-Bad so she can shoot a yote in the face for Rocky biggrincamo.gif
Total of ten shots today from the Lott and a couple magazines full from the 17Mach2 and the Bushmaster for extra trigger work. Oh, a clip-full out of the Kel-Tec went into the target, too.

One fifty round box-O-Lotts is heavier than a brick of 22LR, for sure!!

Bob
Chuckbuster
Bob, I feel your pain and like your video a Lott. AL screamcamo.gif
Glen
laugh.gif Come on over & we'll bust a groundhog or two 1st Bob!! biggrincamo.gif My Brother shoots a 45-70 with 400gr'ers. I can imagine a box of those 500's weighing in at about 15lbs. shockedcamo.gif
Tigger
You have my attention and I don't need to shoot that crazy gun!! anim_rofl2.gif crycamo.gif anim_rofl2.gif
Glen
I just realized you shot the Lott BEFORE the M2!! Are you crazy man!! I woulda shot the M2 1st. That would have readied you for that pounding flinch you tend to get. laugh.gif tongue.gif

Picked up a box of Hornady 325gr FTX (sorta looks like a V-Max for elephants freakedcamo.gif )
Can't find any more Hornady Lott brass angrycamo.gif (couldn't find the PissedCamo Smilie, either)

anim_rofl2.gif

Guess I'll have to load them in Win Mag cases........

Reckon these at 2750fps or so should be able to handle those tough Bull PDs shockedcamo.gif

Also thinkin' they may be the perfect Coyote-Facial-Reconstruction protocol coolcamo.gif

.458 Winchester Magnum cases are a little too short.

You can use .375 H&H Magnum cases. Just use a tapered expander to open the neck and trim to size.

Case length: .458 Lott = 2.800"

.375 H&H Magnum = 2.850"
.458 Winchester Magnum = 2.500"
skypilotbc
Good suggestion, Lou! biggrin.gif
Not really hurting.......for brass anyway.....
Will make do with what I have, for now. Heck, this thing may detach my retinas, rotator-cuff and change my sex before long, anyhoo.
Still gonna be fun to see what it does to the PD pups....

Ya gotta use enough gun, ya know biggrincamo.gif

I use a Past Mag Plus recoil pad when I shoot my .375 H&H at the range. Nowhere near the kick of your Lott, but I can shoot quite a bit with no discomfort.

http://www.midwayusa.com/Search/Default.as...-_1-2-4_8-16-32

Also, I found that sitting up straight and not leaning into the rifle makes a big difference. When you lean forward your body can't roll with the recoil and your shoulder takes the full force of the recoil. The problem is finding a bench and stool of the right height to allow sitting up straight.

Best of all is getting a Caldwell Lead Sled. It takes all the bite out of the big bruisers. There's really no reason to get beat to death doing load development. ph34r.gif Amazing, they have four different models now.

Are you really gonna shoot PDs with that thing? blink.gif
skypilotbc
I sure intend to.....Have shot them before with a 460 Weatherby.....not many, but it is DIFFERENT.

Shooting the Win Mag cases is a lot (one t) like shooting 38 Specials in a 357 Mag--just tends to dirty up the end of the chamber and gives a lot of free-bore. Not a serious problem for me.
The Lott is not going to replace my normal PD arsenal, just augment it. Hey, ya gotta shoot sumthin' while the others are cooling off biggrincamo.gif

Not sure what brand of recoil pad is on her, but it seems to work fine. If I do any extended bench work with it I will just throw a sandbag over my shoulder ph34r.gif

The Past recoil pads go on your shoulder, not on the rifle. Kind of like a strap-on sandbag but more comfortable. smile.gif

So you have a certain reputation for this behavior, hmmm? unsure.gif

Will there be video?
skypilotbc
That has been my routine over the last several years--head out West with a Focus full of guns and ammo, shoot PDs, take pictures and videos, come back home and post the videos for Glen biggrincamo.gif

Works for me. Will be taking a short trip up to Nebraska next weekend to meet a bunch of the guys from Saubier. Had a good time there last year, but only stayed for one day of shooting as I was on my way to Wyoming.

Wyoming is in June coolcamo.gif

Bob
Glen
biggrincamo.gif And I do enjoy them Bob!! Thanks!! cool.gif
DittoHead
I still have the video of the PD pup getting hit with the 17gr V-Max from the 17 Mach 4.

Now you see 'em, now you don't. biggrin.gif
skypilotbc
Well, no pics or videos from the Nebraska shoot (will do them in Wyoming), but the LOTT will kill a PD shockedcamo.gif
Shot ten or so and, while not brutal to the shooter (s), really tore the dogs up. Had one pup that was only showing his head, so I aimed "through" the mound with a 500gr FMJ-RN. Blew through around 2 feet of the front of the mound and buried too far into the back of the mound to recover. Only red stuff in the hole???

The first victim was torn in half with bits and pieces everywhere. Like I said before, this will not be my primary PD rifle, but it is a bit of fun biggrincamo.gif

1 Week til Wyoming!! coolcamo.gif

Good luck in Wyoming Bob. Give them LOTTS of hell!! anim_rofl2.gif anim_rofl2.gif

Heading to Wyoming myself, on the 24th, but I have to leave the rifles at home contentcamo.gif Mother has some frequent flier miles to burn up, and she asked me if I'd like to go to Yellowstone. NO ONE I know turns down a free trip to Yellowstone, even IF the rifles stay at home. biggrincamo.gif

Mom's recovering from her third bout of cancer, so I thought it best to spend more time with her, and this is a good excuse for that, too. We'll fly into Jackson and see the sights from there. We'll see the Teton NP, too, since it's right up the road, and maybe take in the museums in Cody, that should be interesting.

I was gonna do it next year, or the year after, anyway, by motor vehicle, this way I'll save a LOT of driving time. freakedcamo.gif
skypilotbc
Some great pics from your trip, two-nz biggrincamo.gif
Picked these up at Lock Stock & Barrel on my way out to Wyoming and forgot to post the pics confusedcamo.gif
Barnes Triple Shock--300 and 350 grain versions.....wonder what they would do to a PD.....or anything else, for that matter coolcamo.gif

Gonna have to spend some time at the range with the chronograph....maybe find a groundhog somewhere???

Bob

I got a hankering for more bison burgers, can I borrow the Lott for a couple of weeks next time I go to the Yellowstone? freakedcamo.gif
skypilotbc
Sure you can.....just have to take me with you biggrincamo.gif

No doubt those 325 gr FTX would do the job, and if not, the CZ holds 6...plenty of room for some 500 gr FMJ coolcamo.gif
