Full Version: Ruger Charger in .17HM2

I went to the range today, to play around a bit with my much neglected rimfires. I had contacted my friend up the road aways, and he met me there, with some of his custom 10/22 collection, including a Charger he'd converted to HM2. That was a real hoot to shoot, he has a Burris FFII 3-9 on it (yep, a rifle scope) so it was a bit awkward for me to shoot well, but at fifty yards, I was still shooting 1" groups with it.

I left the camera at home, unfortunately, but he's had it stripped and Cerakoted, and it's a handful with the heavy barrel/bolt he's got in it, but it's sure a cute little thing. tonguecamo.gif He also had one of his 10/22Ms along for the ride, it shot so well, it's going PDoggin' this summer. None of Doug's Rugers have any stock parts left, except maybe the receivers screamcamo.gif , but they all shoot really well. He brought along a couple of CZ boltguns, too, a .22LR and a training rifle in .17HMR.

I had to play a bit with my old Remington M24 gallery gun, but with my bad eyes, and it's iron sights, I had a real chore to shoot anything resembling groups with it. It being made in 1922 probably added to the difficulties, but I did manage to shoot some decent groups with CCI Short HPs, which were snappy enough to work the action pretty well. Some Winchester shorts barely cycled the old coot. I like that old gun, but my eyes don't do it justice any more.
My relatively stock DSP sporter shot well with it's favored Power Points, I'm going to have to kill some tree rats with it, just so it remembers why I have it.
My old Glenfield 60 proved again why I don't like Remington rimfire ammo, it flat out sucks, even the "Golden" stuff. It choked and puked until I threw the stuff away, just to quit the aggravation. It likes SuperX stuff, and CCI MiniMagHPs pretty well, enough to make me stock up next time I see it.

We did all our shooting at 50 yards today, because it was raining and kinda cold. It felt like cheating, after all the 100 yard centerfire shooting I normally do.
I do wish I'd taken the camera, though, that Charger is pretty danged sharp!

I don't think I need to own one, but I'd like to try one of those Chargers out.

The local Big Bear Sports Center (Billings, MT) has them for $259 with bipod and mounts. I was tempted but I saw a fellow shooting one at our local range and its performance wasn't that impressive... of course, no telling how good a shot the guy was.~AMMOe

I'd guess they need all the upgrades of any other 10-22 to get them to perform at their best. I really have no use for one. They are neat though.

I never saw it before Doug reworked it, so all I have to go on, is what Doug said. It had the newer plastic trigger assembly in it, and he swapped it out with something else out of his copious parts drawer, it had a pretty decent trigger when I shot it, I suspect it has some of those highdollar parts installed, a couple of shots got away from me, so I know it was awfully light, that rarely happens with me.

I don't think I'd want one, either, when it comes to handguns, I'm a Colt 1911, S&W and Ruger revolver kinda guy, or a Ruger MkII (don't like the new MkIIIs, though).

Man. I'm getting even more wheel-gun crazy as time goes on. I have the Glock 22, a 1911, and a couple of Ruger MkI's for my kids, but otherwise I'm a wheelgunner! I just picked up a S&W 625 ".45 Caliber Model of 1989" (what ever that means) to test some prototype .45 ACP ammo. The gun is a phenomenon! Double action bowling pins without a bit of muzzle flip! It is the first "new" S&W I've owned. Lacks aesthetics but shoots like a real machine.

I've spent every evening this week out with my old Model 17 burning .22LR in every way that I can think of. Spent tonight shooting 12ga hulls double action. I'm getting daffy for six-shooters in my old age! ~AMMOe

Glenn, what's not to like about the mkIII's? They're nearly identical to the mkII's. I traded my old mkII (long sad story) on a gun. Ended up later on with a mkIII. The mag release is in a different spot, and I'm still not used to that. Otherwise it feels the same.

I don't like the magazine safety and the loaded chamber indicator. ALL GUNS are always loaded, so both things are just redundancy for idjits who probably shouldn't own guns anyway. That's my oldfashioned, hidebound, hardheaded opinion, and it will not change. I don't like change, especially the 2008 model of change. suspiciouscamo.gif

Yeah I never even notice the loaded chamber indicator. It's meaningless to me either way. I really wish I still had my old mkII for sentimental reasons. Beyond that, I like this one just as well. I kept the Hogue grips from the old one, swapped them over to the new one, and it feels the same. It also came with a scope mount and is pre-drilled & tapped for installation. My old one did not come that way.

Anywho, I'm not trying to sell you on it. I was just curious.

The Charger is cool and the price is right for a fun plinker........... BUT this stupid state says they are illeagle to own....idiots!!

I have a couple MKII and love them. The MKIII's are OK, but man the price has gone way too high for my frugal budget.

I have been leaning that way the last couple of gun purchases. LOL biggrincamo.gif

Soooo in your state....it's OK to own one 10 shot .22 autoloading pistol but not another?

Well the way it "plays out" if the pistol is semi-auto and has the ability to accept a detachable magazine, and meets more than 2 of the listed reguirments it's illeagle in NY

1~ weighs more than 50 ounces... and the Charger does, like 56 oz

2~ the magazine/clip does not go thru the pistol grip

3~ a shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles the barrel and that permits the shooter to hold the firearm with the nontrigger hand without being burned... so the forend could be construed to meet this requirment, especially as it allows you to hold the gun with the nontrigger hand

4~ a threaded barrel capable of accepting a barrel extender, flash supressor, forward handgrip, or silencer

5~ a semiautomatic version of an automatic rifle, shotgun or firearm

So the charger meets the first 2, and also the third for the most part. What the state wanted to do was make it illeagle for a "pistol" style assult weapon, it just so happens that the definitions make the Charger fall into that catgory. You must also remeber that when the '94 assult ban midnighted in 2004 for most of the country it did not here in NY as they adopted most of it into state law. contentcamo.gif

If Ruger had made the Charger from the 77/22 action it would be legal.
