I was cruising the small dairy farm in Orange Cty NY this afternoon and the first groundhog that I found sunning itself on the dry vegetable patch didn't move as I stopped the SUV and got out. Peeked at him from around the back of the SUV. Didn't move when I ranged him just to be sure. 34 yds. Didn't move when I took the time to scramble from the back seat into the trunk area to pull the rifle case into the passenger compartment to uncase the rifle, put the magazine in, take off the scope covers and come back around the back of the SUV to peek at him again. Let's just say he didn't move until the 30gr PolyTip Hornady from the Sako 22 Mag smacked him. Then he flipped over on his back and his back legs started twitching. One shot did the damage. I used the slope of the back of the SUV and my hand as my rest. The Zeiss Conquest was turned up to 8x. I must have been pretty jacked up as it took me some time to get the crosshairs settled down. I shoulda taken a pic with the camera phone. Sigh. Next time.

cool.gif Sounds like a really nice outfit ~ Sako/Zeiss. What model Sako? Got any pics?

Sako Quad 22 Mag Zeiss Conquest 2.5-8x32mm. Great shooter out of the box. Only mods were to put a heavy rubber recoil pad in place of the slipperly plastic buttplate that came with the gun, replace the action screws with Allen head bolts that can be more easily torqued calibrated, and install stronger firing pin spring for better ignition.

Shoots 30gr V-Max CCI or Hornady Poly Tips the best. Will group 5 at 100 yds under 1 inch if I do my part.

Spiffy for sure!

I spied two groundhogs today. One was a big fat old gray hog. Gotta wait until after the young are born....
