The carnage shot. biggrincamo.gif

Total of 15 crows. There are 14 in this pic & 1 decoy on the far left. I shot the 15th crow on the 2nd setup. I had about 3 hours in the 1st 14 crows. Plus the 1st crow of the AM glided off to the tree tops several hundred yards away. No chance on recovering that one.

Haven't seen a murder of crows looking so well behaved in quite awhile Glen...and them dudes are behaving laugh.gif I know that was a fun time

Glen,
Being new to crow calling I'm just curious, how long did you hunt to kill those and were you hunting alone or did you have help?
Jerry
Hey Glen, nice shooting! cool.gif What rifle were you using and what kind of range were you shooting from?
Glen
Mike-- Those are some well behaved,, and ventilated biggrincamo.gif ,, crows!!

Red-- I was set up by 7 AM. The 1st crows came in about 7:20. I left there at 9:45. I was by myself too. cool.gif

Jerry-- The farthest shot was 40yds swinging from left to right on a slow FLYING bird. I was using my trusty 870 in 20ga with 7 1/2's. I've found that rifling them just isn't as fun as shotguns on the fly for me. biggrincamo.gif

Altho I started slow at one point I was 10 for 14. I ended the day @ 60% for those 15 birds. Not bad considering I've not been out wingshooting since last October & then I didn't get much shooting in. I usually shoot 65%.

That migratory bird law that protects these flying varmints for part of the year has to be one of the stupidest game laws ever. I believe that black vultures (buzzards that don't wait for prey to die, they actually kill things) are protected under the same general law.
Been thinking about getting a 12 ga. auto and one of those quiet, long Hastings barrels for crows. How did you get so many without scaring the others off after a couple of shots, Glen?
Glen
The 2nd rock pile from right to left you can see my brown coat against the big tree in the background. I was setting against that tree. I shot them all thru the branches above me as they flew over. I had one come in & just as it started to swoop up to land on a branch I pounded it from about 18-20yds. Man the feathers flew from that one!! I set 6 full bodied dekes out to the left of the pic. I set the FX3 next to one. We keep the dekes about 30yds out in front of us. It was a feeding setup. Once the geese starting flying get ready. The crows are next to start squawking. I like to use a hand call at 1st to just bring a bird or two in at a time. This is when I keep the caller set on a crow distress or dyeing crow. Hit the e-caller when you shoot & the birds flair. The distress can & sometimes does bring them back for round 2. Then when this dies off I go to the e-caller. I like to use FP's crow party. It's non-threatening & seems to be inviting. Now the crows can come in 10 at a time so be locked & loaded. When the flair from the shooting hit the crow distress on the e-caller. This will work for a while too. Then when that sound dies off it's time to crank it up. I use the crow fight on full volume. This is when if there are more than a handful of birds around it's nice to have another shooter. Cause now the whole bunch of em are gonna come!! It's great too. Then when this dies off,, which is usually purdy quick,, I'll just set & watch for anymore birds off in the distance & wait a little while. I'll hit the crow party once in a while for a couple minutes & see if there are any new birds in the area. The one thing I've found that sometimes helps too is that once you have the same number of dekes & crows on the ground bag the dekes up. The birds in the carnage pic were all placed there with wings laid back & their beaks stuck in the dirt.

If you want to know anything else just holler. I'll try to help.
