I've been thinking about doing this for some time, so a few months ago I started pulling the pieces together to start a BLOG about hunting varmints and small game with "Modern Adult Airguns". I've been hunting with these guns for over three decades, and since there are no hunting oriented airgun magazines out there for people to read, enjoy, and maybe learn something from, I thought a BLOG about the subject could be fun and maybe expose folks to a side of airgunning that is very challenging and rewarding.

I've been fortunate to live in the West my whole life. The variety of varmint and small game animals to hunt out here is nearly endless. I've had the opportunity, over the years, to enjoy many fantastic days in the field hunting most of them. I have a lot of hunts planned for this year, and will be adding to the blog on a weekly basis.

If you already hunt with airguns, or are curious about hunting with them, I hope you will find something here that is interesting, entertaining, and maybe even informative.

The BLOG contents will consist of, as that old expression goes, "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue". I hope you enjoy it.

The BLOG can be found here: http://varmintair.typepad.com/varmintairs_blog/

I just noticed that you picked up an FX Tarantula. Congratulations, you just hit one out of the park with that acquisition. The Tarantula's are unbelievable. That gun was sold by FX under a bunch of different names. Mine is an FX 2000. Same gun just a different stock configuration. It was also sold as the Black Widow, Webley FX 2000, and several other names that I don't recall right now.

The gun is ridiculously accurate, and will take squirrels and prairie dogs at 90+ yards, no problem. Glad that you liked the videos. I'm looking into what would be required to embed video clips into the blog topics, but I want to do it in high resolution. I'm not happy with the highly compressed files that end up on YouTube. The quality of the original clips is very good, but what ends up on the video hosting sites is very poor.

I have produced an airgun varmint hunting video titled, "Airgun Hunting the California Ground Squirrel". It has over 260 video clips in it of ground squirrels being taken from about 30 yards out to almost 100 yards. Probably half of the footage was shot using my FX 2000. Eric has a review of the DVD on the home page here: http://www.varminter.com/particles/dvdreview.htm Have fun with your new toy, it's a good one.

Hey thanks for the compliments! I ony own the gun so far, I'm putting the scope, and support gear together as the funds become available. I woud like to know more about your setup on yours optics wise. Do you have any suggestions or tips for maintenence, or where to go to find info? Do you have any tips for the Black Widow, tuning/shooting wise?

I just finished reading the entire bog actually lol. It is very well done, and I only dream of living in an area like that! Nice job with it! You might want to search for film/media forums, and find out what they do for hosting videos, they will probaby know a ton about it. I'll probably buy a copy of your DVD soon, the clips look great!

Thanks Jerry, I'm glad you enjoyed the blog. I currently have a Bushnell 3200 Elite 7X21X40mm mildot scope on her, but a Bushnell Legend 5X15X40mm mildot scope would also work great, and they are less money. I have several of them on other guns, and I like them a lot.

There really isn't much to do as far as maintenance is concerned. Just keep it wiped down. Since the gun is new to you, I would clean the barrel. Don't use firearm type solvents on it. They will attack the seals. I use a Beeman product called MP5. It's great on the bore and good for wiping the exterior of the gun down with.

Get yourself some JSB Exact 15.9 grain Jumbo, and JSB Exact 18.1 grain Heavy Jumbo pellets for it. The gun will shoot them into a bug hole at 50 yards. Especially the 18 grainers.

My web guy is getting info for me regarding embedding high resolution video clips in the blog. I'll be adding new material to it several times a week.

How was the person you got the gun from filling it?
Jerry
Thanks for the tips on maintenence, I'll order a bottle of that and give it a try. I was thinking about getting a sample pack of all the pellets from straight shooters, but I will def. give the JSBs a try. It came with 21.0gr Beeman Kodiaks, and they shot very well in the gun. I need a chrony for my testing lol.

Good luck with the video embeding, I'm looking forward to seeing them in the blog!

The guy I bought it from was using a Hill manual pump. I don't (read: WILL NOT) want to go down that road. I posted about it on Calif. predator forums to you about my desired setup, but I might wind up with a hand pump just for a back up, who knows. The one thing I see on the gun that worries me, is that little dust cap covering the fill port seems like it would like to fall out. I'm very careful with my stuff, but the o-ring fit bugs me. Has yours ever disappeared out in the field?

Thanks,
Jerry

Do try the JSB's. They work really well in both my FX 2000, and RWS Rapier. The Kodiaks are great also, but the JSB's are lighter and shoot flatter at long distance. There is definitely a place for both.

I have never lost the fill port plug on my FX, but I just did a blog entry on what I use on guns with no fill port protection at all, and you could do the same thing when in the field hunting, and keep the nice plug for use when shooting at home.
