I got a 16" GM fluted and threaded sporter barrel from Hi Desert Dog for my son's 77/22. Initial testing with Eley subsonics was promising. Keep in mind that this has been a switch barrel rifle so there is no bedding to support the barrel what so ever, it's completely floated, and temps are in the lower 30's. I beleive that with some barrel support at the rear, and 60+ degree temperature, groups will improve considerably. The testing was done indoors at 30 yards where wind was not a factor, yet it was cold.

Also I ran some through the '64 T-Bolt. Last time out I found that CCI SGB shot pretty well in it. However, in the field I'm not real impressed with the killing ability of those bullets on squirrels. They are designed for minimal meat damage and that much is true, but the subs are better killers IMO. So, after searching for the optimal ammo for that rifle I've landed back on the Eley subs again. It shoots them pretty well. It also shoots the segmented 40grain CCI sub well. I have not had the chance to try them in the field and they are somewhat difficult to find.

Nice group. smile.gif I've never heard of Hi Desert Dog barrels. Did you find them on RFC?

What problems did you have with the CCI SGB? I bought a box of 50 for my T/C Classic but have not fired any yet.

I've been considering adding a bolt-action .22 to the gun pile. It looks like that Ruger has been working pretty well for you.

Yeah, they are a RFC sponser. http://www.hi-desertdog.com/index.php

The SGB passes thru seemingly without expansion. The flat nose is supposed to kill better than a typical round nosed bullet, I did not see that. Not that the SGB's are bad, the squirrels were dead, but the Subsonic HP drops them quicker with less noise, and Wolf M/T shoots at least as well as SGB for about the same cost.

I love the Ruger 77/22's. They shoot acceptably well out of the box. The triggers are easy to tune with a stoning and polishing. Barrels are easy to swap. 3 position safety and a flush fitting 10 round magazine, etc.

However, if I were planning to buy a bolt action and had no plans of swapping barrels...ever, I would choose a CZ. They are generally more accurate right off. The CZ triggers are a little more fiddly but a Brooks trigger kit can fix them.

I have a Ruger 77/22 under the seat of my Jeep because I consider it a lesser gun than some others. Frankly, I don't know why. Looks good, and the barrel that finally ended up on it (a Ruger pulled from a pile of Ruger barrels) shoots very well. I wanted to get a GM barrel for it but never got around to it. Go figure...~AMMOe

You know I bought an Anschutz 1416 a while back, not sure why? Other than I wanted to own an Anschutz. It's accurate, very nice trigger, and so on. I like hunting with it but in all honesty it does not outshoot my trusty 77/22 with a Clark barrel upgrade. If something absolutely needs to be shot in the eyeball, I always rely on the 77/22 and I have less dollars in it.

I have no problems with my Ruger's accuracy. If I did it wouldn't ride along with me!

I took a look at GM's website. They have heavy, blued and fluted 1-18" twist barrels for the 77/22 for $57 on special.~AMMOe
