The farmer I help keep his grounghog population undercontrol reported a groundhog sighting yesterday. I think it is a little early but he stands by his report he saw a ground hog on his driveway 20 feet from his house. I am hopeing that spring is just around the corner.
I think I need to get to the reloading bench so I am ready.......

I had one pass through my yard a few days ago. I think the early sightings are ones seeking to spend a romantic evening with the opposite sex. I could swear the one I saw had a tiny bottle of wine tucked under one arm.

And WHO SAYS I grew UP???!!
I hunt near Hookstown. Have hunted near Dubois, Williamsport, Lock Haven, Harrisburg and a few more.
Once I counted the number of times I moved. When I reached 42 moves I stoped counting. All were for Dad's work, my work, and the military. My favorate was Alaska. The only problem, up there the game hunts you.......

I'll never forget my dad taking me to the Hookstown Fair the first time to see the tractor pulls. Always had great food too. I still consider that place home.

I hunt near the fairgrounds. The fair makes so much noise the groundhogs don't come out.
The picture is my favorate sitting spot. This was taken late fall.

It looks identical to a field I used to hunt above Bradys Run Park. I was shooting a Winchester model 70 heavy barrel .243 with 18x Unertl scope. Another groundhog outfit was my Remington 700 BDL .30-06 shooting the accelerator round. I was surprised at how accurate that round was. I miss those days. I'll be 61 years young this year and only a matter of time before I retired or semi-retire back to those parts. Wow, you brought back old memories. I'm sure you hunted the State Game Lands in that area as well. Thanks for the photo.

The last time I hunted a game land I saw a hunter walking out and asked if he saw any bucks. He said no but he got off a "Few good sound shots". I asked "what the hell is a sound shot"? He look at me as if I asked a stupid question and said "you hear a sound and shoot at it". I asked "what if it is a hunter?" He looked at me as if it never occured to him there were other humans in the game lands. I left and never went back.
Of course this was after my brother was shot rabbit hunting in a game land. He was leaving the field walking down a road when two hunters were walking in to hunt. They saw my brother who wore an orange vest. When they were a hundred yards apart a rabbit jumped across the road. The two hunters started shooting with 12 guage shotguns at the rabbit. They peppered my brother with shot. Several went into his skin around the skull and we found several pellets in the pockets of his vest. One of the shooters said "hey, I think we shot someone" then they split. They left my brother bleeding in the road. I would of leveled my shot gun and fired til empty.
I avoid game lands now.

yeah that can happen anywhere, though certainly more likely in a public area. A buddy and I were both shot by a rabbit hunter while we were on the pavement putting our guns in the trunk of my Olds 98! Same scenario, everybody's wearing orange, a rabbit runs across the road, and the numbskull who is only 60 or so yards away, also standing on the road, fired at the rabbit. Asphalt doesn't slow the shot down by much. Luckily I saw what was about to unfold before he pulled the trigger. I grabbed my buddy and spun him around so our backs were toward the shooter. With heavy winter clothes on, neither of us were seriously hurt. This happened on a county road but the land was privately owned. Idiots everywhere I tell you!

The Game Lands are crowed and I have heard shot hitting leaves of trees I was near but I've never been hit. I always walk away from anyone I see. Places to hunt are becoming more and more scarce and therefore more hunters in the public areas.

The farmer reported he saw another groundhog yesterday. I guess it could be the same one as before. I need to walk the fields to look for any digging activity.
I'm just hoping that spring is around the corner......

Had one in my sights a week ago. Would only pop his head out. Thought it best to let him live a little longer...
