Hey guys,
Need your expertise. Buddy of mine is looking for the best 22 Mag ammunition.
He runs a slaughter house and needs to shoot cattle. I'd of thought the soft points would be best, but he claims better luck with hollow points.
So question is...which brand is known best for good horse power?????????

I'm guessing they are shot at point blank range.
I'd think almost any bullet would work. A 40 grain HP would be my first choice to try, but then I never shot a cow in the head. There might well be a pass through with those, if that's not desireable a 30 grain ballistic tip or TNT might work better?

I had a buddy that used remington V-max for head shots on hogs and he said they couldn't be beat and that it would drop them on the spot and they wouldn't move, I have found for myself that a v-max will not open till it hits soft tissue then its like a bomb going off

I remember a slaughter house in Arkansas years ago and they had a guy on a platform above the cattle shoot. He used a .22 LR and would take one shot to the back of the head as the cow came under him. They went down pretty hard and within seconds they were dangling from a cable with their throat sliced. No doubt a .22 mag will certainly get the job done. I'd say the same as Red with the 40gr HP for shock value. I think the bullet was for knock down power and the blood letting is what actually killed many of those that I watched. I thought they had gone to some sort of pneumatic gun since then.

The 40 grain FMJ would work. It's just electro-plated lead. The HP Winchester would do the trick as well. Or the Federal/CCI 50 grain???~AMMOe

I used to work in a slaughter house when i was a teenager. About 1950 or so. We used to hit them just above the eyes on the forehead with the back side of an axe from a platform over the loading chute. Then they went to using a 22LR. Said it was quicker and a more humane kill. But the 22LR worked fine.

If you mean .22WinMag, it's probably overkill. Any reputable high speed .22LR with a 40 grain solid should be the ticket. I like both CCI MiniMag and Remington.

The 50 grain HPs are the go as I have shot a few cattle with them at point blank and they were dead as a door nail.. The mag gives a fair bit more smack that a .22lr so you can be a bit off without any problem , I don't think that there is ever enough lead when shooting animals just some types of ammo do the job differently than other types..Mick..

If you can get a hold of any of the 50gr gold dot hps from CCI in the maxi mag. They would work wonders.
