I had the good fortune to go to a get together from another board this past week. We were in the Daniel Boone Nat'l Forest in southern most Kentucky. We hunted one day less than a mile from the Tenessee border. The terrain is rugged to say the very least about it. Nonetheless it was beautiful. We hunted strip mined land & there is over 200,000 acres of it there. The only rule was to "Immediately leave the area of active mining." Not a problem for me. They use dynamite & I only had a 204 & my 357 lever rifle!! laugh.gif

This area has a very large Elk population. Altho I didn't see any there was tracks & scat & other sign all over this area. The fella I rode down with did get to see a nice 6X6 tho. biggrincamo.gif

Here's what a lot of the area looks like.

This picture is from the truck. You can see 2 trees that stand taller than the rest right above the "02" in the date. My coyote came out just above them. That was about 3/4 of a mile from the truck.

Nice dog too!! biggrincamo.gif

It's hard to see but this big male has a 2" black tip on his tail & a lot of black on back & neck. Estimated weight was 30-35lbs.

Sounds like a good time Glen and that is one healthy dog. Good shootin'

Nice Dog Glen, what did you use to call him in. Oh have you been back to WV this season.

Mike-- It was a lot of fun. A lot of good folks were there. Thanks!!

BIGSHOW-- Thanks!! I used the FX3. We started with a couple interrogation howls with about 30 seconds between them. Waited 2 minutes & hit the Dyieng Jack sound. They were there in under 3 minutes. The other never showed itself. I heard it crashing back down thru the thick stuff. I haven't made it to WV yet. I want to hunt a couple days toward the end of February tho. biggrincamo.gif

Was that public hunting land you killed that yote on? Ive been down to Mt. Olivet,KY and there are coyotes everywhere down there it was unbelievable. The only problem was we werent allowed to shoot any of them.
Glen
RM-- Yes it was. We were on the Red Bird WMA down there. Plus like I mentioned about the strip land. Find a mining operation & real close you will find a road up into the reclaim. Stay away from the active mining & you will be fine. Just check the Kentucky regs for there centerfire seasons.

Glen
Dropped the hide off today to get tanned. He said it should take about 2 months. biggrincamo.gif I'm ready to get it back already. laugh.gif
Red
Cool.

I keep threatening to get one tanned. Haven't killed one with really nice fur in a couple years though.
Glen
The guy I took it to said he liked the looks of what he could see of it. It was rolled up & frozen. Nice thick fur & a big bushy tail.

I just talked to one of the Farmers I hunt on this AM. He told me him & his neighbors have been seeing an ALL BLACK COYOTE!!!! biggrincamo.gif
DittoHead
I hope you get that black coyote, Glen. That would be a really cool trophy. smile.gif
Glen
No doubt DH!! I came home & asked Diane if we would have the money for a full body mount & she said she would find it!! biggrincamo.gif

I'm surprised the cat will get near it. laugh.gif

The other cat could care less about it. laugh.gif
Red
Very Nice. I must get one done.
Glen
Thanks Red. biggrincamo.gif The other one's I've shot weren't nice enough to do this. It was either too warm or the hole was too big. laugh.gif I hopw you get a nice furred up one this winter. biggrincamo.gif
Mush
Nice pic's Glen. I see you had your 204 with you. How far, if any, did the yote run after it was hit? I hope to take my 204 CZ this winter to take care of some farm yotes keeping the farmer up at night.
Glen
Thanks Mush. That coyote did two flips while biting at the wound & died a couple feet from where he was standing when shot. I used a 40gr Berger at about 3900fps. The shot was about 50yds quartering away. Your 204 will do the trick. Good Luck & I can't wait to see some "good" coyotes!! biggrincamo.gif
