Hello again folks. So the moon is upon us again. Earlier this week I talked a friend into going out with me early this morning before the sun rose. I called and called him last night but couldn't get a hold of him so I ended up going by myself. I also ended up getting a later start than I had planned. I set my alarm for 3:30am, but I didn't get out of bed until 5:00. I could barely move, but from somewhere in the back of my mind I thought uuuhhh... moon, rifle, coyotes... snap out of it. So when I got in the truck I said dang, its awful dark out here... crap cloud cover. Well I drove to my spot and snowshoed out anyway. I got myself situated just as it was starting to get light. After a few minutes of just looking and listening, I let out two male challenge howls at medium volume on the foxpro. Then I was quiet as a mouse for about ten minutes. Not far off to my right a coyote comes walking out of the woods and is staring right at me. I had my head turned that direction but I didn't even flinch as we looked each other eye to eye. I was thinking crap, the foxpro is still in my trigger hand but if I move its all over. Meanwhile my heart is beginning to beat faster because a second coyote steps out and stands right next to the first. Luckily she couldn't see me as there was a tree blocking her view of me. Still the other one kept staring me down. Eventually (I dont know how long this took) the second coyote lost interest and started to leave. Or maybe she was trying to get down wind because she circled wide through the woods behind me. The first dog turned his head to watch her leave which was my opportunity to get rid of the foxpro and hold my rifle properly. Now I dont shoot left handed so I had to turn my body to be able to line up. The coyote saw this movement and started barking and backing up. I still put my crosshairs on his neck and squeezed off the hornet. As soon as he dropped, I stood up to see if I could catch the second one. I found her in my scope but she was a fair way off. I squeaked a couple times to get her to stop and made my best effort at an excited second shot while resting against the tree I had been sitting by. Alas, I missed that one, but maybe I'll be able to try again another time. Luckily I had remembered to bring my camera for the forum this time so I hope you enjoy the photos. As I walked out there was my friend who I had been trying to call the night before. He had gotten the message, and he showed up actually before I did, but he had been waiting for me in a different spot in the same area. Oh well.
