i was wondering where i would hold for a shot at a coon around 60-100yds if my gun is dead on at 40yd im using tmj they shoot around 1603fps at 50 yds if that helps anyone

If you are zeroed at 100 yards you'd be hitting just under 1" high at 50. Therefore if you're zeroed at 50 you'll need about a 1" holdover at 100 yards. That's based on a 40gr round. You'd be better off sighting your gun in for 100 yards and working from there. JMHO

i really dont plan on hitting any coon at 100yds but thanks for the info now what about the bullet type i heard a lot of **** about using a tmj instead of a hp
Jerry
You're much more likely to just poke a hole in the animal and have a wounded critter run off with a TMJ. The 40gr HP rounds do a much better job.

I actually like the 30gr VMAX best on raccoons. I have had some pretty destructive shots with that little round! I recall one that I had shot, and it had plates of its skull opened up like those boxes you get at the Chinease restaurant when you order fried rice shockedcamo.gif . I wish I had taken a picture for the forum.

Just with anything you do, shot placement is key.

shot placement is key.

I agree with Jerry and I would recommend some time spent on the range poking holes in paper. You will then have no doubt where your impact will be and most likely not have an animal crawl off. Try never to just plan on hitting or not hitting an animal...But plan on hitting that animal on a very specific point, exactly where your crosshairs cross. I'll say again what Jerry said...Shot placement is key

+1 on the 30gr Vmax. The TMJ, or FMJ will just punch right through a coon. Another option would be a soft point round. Remington makes a 40gr PSP. More expansion without the explosive nature of the Vmax, or JHP if you're interested in the fur.

i will only be going for head shots my gun only likes these rounds i have tried the remington bt and various hp but the accuracy sucks

I just converted my son's 77/17M2 to 22magnum specifically for coons. Made it to the range just before dark this evening (time change dry.gif ) I think he'll be shooting the CCI TNT's, they shot the best of the ammo I tried in the limited time I had before it got completely dark. Hornady 30 grainers did pretty well too and those shoot well in my 10-22M.

I hunted coons with both CCI FMJ and HP. I really couldn't tell the difference under 60 yards with ( as was said) correct bullet placement.~AMMOe

(Back then they were worth $12 each!)
