My 16 yr old nephew from Michigan visited New Mexico recently and I took him coyote hunting. He went home and got a .223 Bushmaster Predator. When I want out to Michigan last week for a visit we went coyote hunting on some private land in northwestern Michigan. We had access to some private land that backs up to large swamp/forest. The land consists of a house, barn and two big hay fields. The fields are separated by a 10 foot wide strip of high brush so that from the house you can see down both fields but once in the field you can't see from one to the other. We decided to set up looking at the swamp/woods right next to the brush that separates the fields. We were about half way from the house to the woods. 2 mph wind was in our face. We thought that a coyote might come out of the woods to look or maybe even come to us along the brush "fence". Well after calling for 2 minutes a big female busted out of the woods and came fast along the brush fence towards us. My nephew shot it at about 40 yards. He was shooting off some home-made Varmintal sticks.
Here's a photo of the 38 lb female and the new coyote hunter.
