A local chain sporting goods store had an ammo sale so I had to see what “deals” they had. After I bought a couple boxes of ammo I was leaving and as usual I scanned the rifle rack on my way out. They have about 30 rifles and shotguns at any one time. I never found anything I wanted but I have to look. I spotted a CZ Varmint in 204 Ruger for last year’s price. I have a 223 CZ American that I really like so I looked at the Varmint model last year but didn’t buy for some reason I can’t recall. I asked to see the rifle and it was a 07 model so I decided to buy it this time. I think it has the 25 ½ inch barrel because this year they went to a 24 inch barrel.
After reading every ones comments about the rifle last year I could not turn it down now. I bought a Nikon 6-18 mil dot with Warne rings (go ahead and get the CZ rings, I’m not impressed with the Warne fit on the CZ so far). With a box of reloads of 39 gn. Blitz kings using 10X powder at 3200 fps I went to the range. The holes were touching each other and I could watch the bullets hitting the paper.
So I had to go ground hog hunting. Two shots between 160 and 200 yards, two dead ground hogs, the head shot at 160 yards went through the skull and the hog just dropped. The 200 yard body shot never exited and the GH just flopped down.
I loaded the same powder up to 3500 fps and back to the farm. Two shots both at 200 yards, two kills. The head shot never exited (see picture). I never got to the other; I had to cross a hot electric and a barb wire fence to get there. This rifle in 204 is great!!
Near the last head shot GH, I found the remains of a GH I shot a couple week ago. It was picked clean by the turkey vultures. All that is left is the skin, the tail on the left, a little hair, and the front piece of the skull attached to the skin (on the right). I did not “RUINT” the GH was it was about as RUINT as you can get………
