I have been looking at PCP rifles again and had my heart set on a AA s410 ERB. Pamona has a complete set with 44 cft tank , rings ,scope, rifle, and jsb pellets for $1397.00...which is alot to me to spend on a rifle that I have never seen or held. (no pcp in Ohio that I have found.)
Ysterday I found a gy online, www.mountainaircustomairguns.com that sells a modified Discovery for $325.00. I have read mixed reviews of the Discovery...most were good though. The guy at mountainair said they would hold a quater size group at 50 yds.
He also said they unly need 2100 psi and a plain scuba tank would get me almost a hundred full fills.
I saw a few folks have them here and seem to like them.

I'm just looking for a decent pcp to paper shoot, shoot walnuts, birds and squirrels with...with 50 yds being prob the longest I would shoot.
I saw Cliff said he uses one on his video on his website.
Has anyone else been around them much and have an opinion?
I don't want to buy junk but trying to stay as cheap as I can since I have never seen or held one and have no idea if Iam even going to like it
them or not.

Thanks,
Ron

I'm buying one in a few weeks. I suggest you get it from MAC1 Airgun, because he tunes them, cleans them up a bit and warranties his work. Most folks who have purchased from him are getting exceptional results.

Check out the review on Airgun Reporter as well.

You probably can't go wrong with something like this as a first PCP.

Thanks Eric!

That video review was the most informative thing I have seen in 2 days of reading about them.
I went to the mac! site, I havent seen anything on them there yet but, will call when they open.

Ron, I know several people that own the Disco including Cliff who has two in both calibers. I know the guy at Mountainair (spelling) does make an excellent shroud to quiet the Disco. One of the guys on my forum bought one and swears it cuts the sound in half. As for the fill pressure you are correct but I don't know about a hundred fills from a scuba tank but maybe. I'd go with the Mac1 and call Tim there and ask him about the fills. The Mountainair shroud comes with a new filler attachment too so that the gun can be easily filled with the moderator on. The pump can work too but a tank sure makes filling easier. I've thought about getting one in .22 myself though I have a couple of other PCP.
One is the AA 410ERB you spoke of.

The other an FX Monsoon.

But for a get your foot in the door shooter and a lightweight hunter I don't think you can beat a Disco. If you intend to go with more PCP's later a 4500 psi tank would be the way to go. But make sure you can find a place to fill the tank. Not a lot of places do so maybe the scuba tank would be best but only for the Disco. Good luck let us know what you get.
Glen
I have a question on tank refills. Can these be done at a place that fills the paintball gun tanks?? Or do they use some sort of gas of some type? Just wondering out loud here. Thanks!! biggrincamo.gif
Ronb
Shooterjohn,
I saw the pic of your thumbhole S410 ealier this week...That Looks Sweet!!! The FX looks great too!

I have been looking and only place I can find that will fill to 4500psi is the local firehouse... they said they will do it but did ask.."about how many times you gonna want this done?" not too promising,....

The scuba shop about 45 min away from me will fill to 3000 psi which would make the Disco the best option.
I just called Mac1 and he is much cheaper...to the tune of $250.00 for a tuned rifle with approx 2 lb trigger. He does not have shrouds though. He did say I would only get maybe 25 fills from a scuba tank as I would lose 50 psi per fill and will even out pressure at around 25 fills.
He said he was out of .22's but would callwhen he gets some in a couple weeks.

I will call mountainair and ask about buying and installing the shroud myself..along with the newer filler end you spoke of.

What forum are you refering too? I belong to this one, the yellow forum, and squirrel dog central, and just joined a disovery forum last night...cant remember what its called but its pretty basic.

Thanks, again!

Hi Ron,

Some paintball shops will fill to 4500 psi. I have a couple that do but they're mainly open on weekends and that's not always convenient for me. You can get an adapter to fill at paintball places and i have one for emergencies. My fire department filled mine a couple of times but then one of the guys complained and you know where that went. I now get mine filled less than a mile from my house at a big sporting goods store called The Sports Chalet. $5 a fill and I have 6 tanks so I'm set. I came real close to buying my own compressor but the price jumped $1000 just as I was going to purchase it pushing the price tag to $4000. Supposedly the dollar dropping and all. Well for $4000 they can keep them I mean $3000 I would grudgingly buy one. I have 2 - 88 cf tanks and 4 - 66 cf ones I got used for free from the fire department.

The scuba tank with 25 fills isn't too bad. You could find a second tank and cascade you fills more than doubling the number of fills from the two tanks.

The Mountainair shrouds are a cinch to install it only takes a minute or two and you're all set.

I hope that helps,
John

man...that's some huge dollars.....I now know why I am still satisfied with my old 5mm Sheridan pump laugh.gif
ShooterJohn
I had one of those for about 50 years Mike. She still shoots like a champ.
MikeNC
Yep...that's the stuff John. Might be a little noisy and not all that these newer models are...but I knocked crows out of trees at some pretty incredable ranges...and knew that when I pulled the trigger, the bandit was going to fold like a deck of cards. that 5mm pellet has some pretty good penetration. Thanks for posting the pic...she's still looking good biggrincamo.gif
Ronb
oops. sorry, messed up trying to add pic
Ronb
I still have my Blue Streak too. It's the old Racine model..I can't remember not having it. It is the one air rifle I own that will never be sold.
Here is a pic I posted a while back of my youngest trying to shoot a bird off the feeder..(this pic was taken just before she missed and shot a hole in the feeder)
ShooterJohn
I love that old gun it went more places and did more things with me than any one person. That 5MM pellet was a killer that's for sure. When my friends had crossman's and thought theirs were powerful I'd shoot mine through 2 fence boards with 10 pumps. They were amazed in what it could do and they all wanted one. I once shot a crow off of a telephone pole behind my aunts house while a couple of my friends where there. It was a long shot and probably more luck than anything else at the distance. But it was a well aimed single shot and the crow fell dead. They were so impressed that shot still comes up to this day when we talk. I happen to have my Leica range finder over at the old house one day and you can still see the telephone pole through the new homes built in the old field. It was 135 yards from that back yard to the top of that old pole. Not the longest distance but I bet a difficult one for even the new guns and their powerful scopes. Open sights it made me a legend to my childhood friends. That gun was my daily buddy and made some awesome shots. I brought home a lot of different game with it too. Cottontail, grey squirrel, quail, pheasant and bullfrogs. I learned to take what you can eat and save some for next time too. That gun played a big part in how I grew up. Of course having some big open fields and places to hunt close to home was a blessing. If you gave me a dime for every shot taken with it I be happy guy. But I have the memories of all of those shots and that's even better. Kids today are missing a lot and that's ashamed.
Jerry
Ron,

The very moment I think about building a rifle, you have to show up, post about these air gun things, and send my thoughts on what to do next straight to hell! laugh.gif But thats a good thing. I love stories like that. Makes me wish I was born a few years earlier! Cool video Eric!

Hey ShooterJohn, check out this link: http://www.airetex.com/catalog1.php?cat=5

I don't know what scale you would like your system to be, but it would be worth callin these guys maybe.

Hey Jerry,

That was the compressor I was going to buy. It went from $3000 to $4000 in a week. They said because the dollar is doing so bad. I don't understand how you can have prdduct that's been sitting and the price take a jump like that when it's old priced stock. Nice compressor and the one I would have purchased.

Speaking of stories from my past. I used to keep sort of hunting logs when I was a kid. I found them recently going through some of my aunts things since she passed away and have been reading them. I have dozens of them that she kept, more than i remember and they are a thrill to read I thought they were long gone. Hunting, trapping all sorts of fishing and outdoor stuff. My wife was reading some and asked me how I ever had time for anything else like school. They are alldated and some go day after day. My aunt who raised me used to tell her stories about taking me out hunting, leaving me and picking me up later. I kept great notes for a kid starting at about eight years old from the dates. The where when and how many, interesting things I saw or found. Cool memories in little notebooks. Too bad I don't have kids to pass them onto.
MikeNC
Wow....Great stories ShooterJohn. That was a nice way to start my day. You can pass a story from your little notebooks on to us from time to time. Telephone pole top shots, especially long ones, make great stories freakedcamo.gif

laugh.gif Sorry Jerry!
I was all set to buy the Air Arms a year ago when I sold my XR-100 but, the AR-15 bug got the better of me again (third time) and I went nuts on that for a while. The AR15 is done and not much I can do to make it better without going into huge bucks and honestly, I just don't get it out much anymore. My new house is surrounded by pasture and horses and nearest place to shoot centerfires is about a 35 min drive away.

I did find a paintball shop about 25 min from me that will fill a 3000 psi scuba tank for 8 bucks. I also saw in the video that I can use a 20oz paintball bottle to fill co2 as the Disco can use both air and co2.
Bear with me here cause I just don't know about this stuff.........On the Disco, the guage has a full across the guage scale for compressed air but, the co2 portion of the guage only goes like a 1/4 of the way.
Will I get as many shots from co2 as I would from air?

I also need to find the best place to buy adapters and yokes to fill from both co2 bottles and to fill compressed air as the video said I need one for each.
The hand pump I want nothing to do with. I am also a bicycle fanatic and avoid hand pumping tires like I would avoid a bad woman ( my track record with bad women proves otherwise thoug) anim_rofl2.gif
...sorry couldn't help it wacko.gif
Jerry
As an alternative to a paintball shop, try a paintball FIELD. Every one I've been to has their own compressor, and can handle 4500 psi. It is a necessity at a field, since so many people are there to play. I'd usually fill my air around 5-6, sometimes 8-9 times per day.

Now, when filling a SCUBA tank, they might be reluctant because of the volume, but as long as it passed its hydro test, they will probably go for it.

Air is quickly taking over paintball as opposed to CO2. CO2 is inconsistent at different temperatures, and turns to liquid form when it gets very cold. I've had problems with that in the past, but then again, I use a much higher volume per shot, and shots come more quickly in paintball. Just my personal experience. Thats really bad playing in a tournament especially. Its a requirement to verify your markers velocity at the end of each game, and if you have an inconsistent pressure, shooting 280 once when the rules are 260, means an immediate DQ, or points lost for that game. So, if you shoot in cold weather, keep that in mind.
Ronb
Thanks Jerry!
I just called a paintball fiels pretty close to me and they do fill to 4500.
I will still use the scuba just because of the cost of a 4500 psi bottle, and I have hit up a couple fire buddies and they are trying to get a used tank or two.
Do they also fill the 20oz bottle with air? If they do, I have one. If I can get a couple fills out of a 20oz, it would be nice to carry out in the field when just plinking.
Jerry
A 20 oz is for CO2 ONLY! They will not fill a CO2 bottle with air. Air is much higher pressure than CO2. The paintball fields are incapable of filling a CO2 tank with air, and the opposite is also true. When filling CO2, you use a scale, when filling an air tank you simply use the gauge. Be careful when you fill air in particular. Turn the valve open and closed smoothly and slowly, to avoid shocking the system.
ShooterJohn
The tanks can get very warm when filling with air. The same goes for filling your gun. Open the valve very slowly and watch your gauge. You can melt an o-ring or blow the air cylinder if you open too fast and over pressure. Smooth and slow works the best.
Ronb
Thanks guys!
I have a Disco in .22 and the K_valave adapter on order from Mac1. Tim said it would be a couple weeks until he gets .22's in.

Great Ron! When you get it show us some pictures.

Hey ShooterJohn.................
Remember the yellow box the 5mils came in?
Some of my most fond memories were made with that rifle, The first Squirrel, first Rabbit, and the first Dove I ever ate.
The kids today don't have it as good as we did back then.

ShooterJohn
It is unfortunate that today's kids will never have the experiences we did growing up. The world isn't as safe or trusting like it was in our day. I guess that's why they call them the good old days. Kids and pellet guns forever.

The yellow boxes came after my old metal screw top cans. I still have some of the metal tins. But yes I remember when they switched to the boxes. Those were the hardest pellets but they killed a lot of animals. I remember more of the game I shot with my Sheridan than the guns of later years. Give a kid a pellet gun today and someone calls the cops.
Ronb
I have spent a lot of time thinking about where kids are today as oppesed to where they were when we were kids.

I hope I am not offending anyone who lives there but,..
I have some land in the southern part of Ohio. It's the kind of place where a kid can have an air rifle, a .22, or a shotgun and nobody thinks a thing about it. The area is completely rural and the nearest town of more than 15 houses is 25 miles away.

I have friends there and man, those guys can hunt! They are damn good woodsmen and do it with just the absolute basics. It's the kind of place every boy would dream of growing up without having to worry about getting expelled for being caught carrying his old timer pocket knife in his pocket at school...becauyse everyone would know he just forgot to leave it at home and not bringing it with ill intentions in mind.

I wasn't raised there for the same reason my kids were not raised there....no jobs, and the ones that are there are minimum wage. There is not internet except for dial up..or the unaffordable satalite internet.
We spend a lot of time there but just cannot afford the paycut or lack of technology that kids are going to need if they are to succeed in life...but it sure is pretty.

What I would give for my kids to be able to grow up in a place so healthy!

I will retire 15 years from next week. I already have a place cleared for my cabin.....it overlooks the best groundhog pasture I have ever seen biggrincamo.gif
ShooterJohn
That sounds like a great place especially today. I unfortunately never took the time to have kids. Always too busy doing something or working. Two sets of grandparent each had property one in upper Michigan the other where I grew up in California. I loved both places. My great uncle had a big almond ranch that was a blast to hunt. If you told your parents you were hopping on the train to go fishing at the river they'd freak out today. But I often did that as a kid, though it obviously wasn't a smart thing to climb onto a moving freight train. I live a mile from the house I grew up in. I always wanted to live where I do now as it was horse property along the creek I hunted and fished. We couldn't afford it when I was a kid the few kids I knew from here growing up I thought were snobs. I live around the corner from one's mom and we are the best of friends now. I thought her daughter was spoiled in school because she had a Corvette in high school. Her dad was a general manage of a local Chevy dealership. He later opened an auto mall. The Chevy dealership he worked for was my wife's uncles dealership. Small world when you think about it. They are the best neighbors and we've been friends for the nine years we've lived here. Funny how things work out. They have seven acres that backs up to my place. I get to shoot pigeons off her barns now and other creatures around our places. She's my ambassador to the neighborhood in getting me places to pest shoot. biggrincamo.gif
Jerry
I checked out the Mac1 page looking for the Discovery, and did not find it. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot, or is there a different name for it. I looked all around and could not find a thing about it. Could somebody enlighten me as to where it is?

Thanks,
Jerry

ShooterJohn
Jerry,
I don't know that it's actually mentioned on his website. I think you just have to call and say I want one with the tune.
Ronb
When I called earlt last week, Tim was out of .22' but I think he did have the .177 model in.

BTW Jerry, I found a 88 ci 5000 psi tank at the local paintball fiels for 150 bucks.
The problem is the tanks output psi is 800 to 900 psi and will stop filling when the resevior reaches 800 to 900. I called the Pure Energy corp. and was told they do not supply a valve spring that can raise the output psi. So as fas as a paintball tank working...apparently its a no go for now.
Someone might be able to modify one to work but the manufacturer wont help.....

I found a used 3000 psi 80 cu ft scuba tank, with fresh hydro stamp and filled with air for 130.00 dollars and ordered the k valve adapter from Mac1 for 75.00 dollars...it's not very portable but, the cheapest way I have found to get shooting.
