I am thinking about putting one on my Ruger 77/22 mag. The .17HMR.
It will be fun if they are well made.
Thanks Longboard
TJD
I have installed two barrels and bolts on 10-22s for the 17 Mach 2. One was the heavy barrel while the other was the factory contour barrel. The slim one is the better shooter and easier one to carry. I would do it again.

Thanks TJD!

I had a 24 inch heavy stainless 1/10 twist E R Shaw barrel an an AR15 I built about 10 years ago...I had no problems with it at all.

I got a E.R. Shaw barrel for my .17HM2, and it rocks! 18" helical fluted.

I got one the first of the year for a Ruger 77/17M2 in 22LR in the slim factory contour and they are very well made. I like to shoot long range with my .22s and with this set up and box of mini-mags I'm geting a 1" group at 300 yards. ( yes a .22 will shoot that far if your willing to put the time in to it)but they do need a little braking in at first

So...what exactly then are you doing to get that .22lr to shoot 1" at 300yds?...a typo perhaps youngbuck3006? suspiciouscamo.gif

jdogg, nice setup!
youngbuck3006
No, that was not a typo I'm shoot a 1 inch @ 300 yards with my .22 LR. so first I guess I should start with my set up, I started with a Ruger 77/17 which I made in to a .22 with a shaw barrel next I put a timmy 2 1/2 lb. trigger then I free floated the factory wood stock and toped it with a Leupold 3-9X33mm AO.
I stared at 25 yds and worked my way out to 300 yds to see what the drop was like (10 MOA. @ 150 and 18 MOA. @ 300) as for my target it was a 1 inch orenge dot ( aim small, miss small) which is the same size as the fine crosshairs in my scope on 9X power @ 300.
The range was measured witha bushnell scout laser rangefinder, and the rest is just knowing how to shoot.

I have an almost identical set-up that began as a 77/17 too although mine has a Clark barrel. It's a real shooter, .2's are common at 50 yards, sometimes I can do a little better, but even .2 @ 50yds translates to 1.2" at 300. Must have been no wind that day. I'm surprised that there is ONLY 18moa drop at 300 yards (54"), what ammo?
Jerry
I'm not doubting you did it, thats just a phenomenal group for just about any rifle at 300yds, rimfire or centerfire. Thats crazy! I pulled out the handy dandy Balistic Calculator, and did some math just because I am curious. Mostly because, from 0 yards to 150 yards you say there is 10 MOA drop, but from 150-300 yards there is only 8 MOA drop. I used: 70 deg Farenheit, 500ft elevation, and 1020 millibars elevation. 36 grn Maxi Mag HV @ 1280fps and ~.126BC. 1.5" scope height. Zero at 100 yards.

I came up with

10.02 MOA total Drop at 150yds......................83.15 MOA total drop at 300yds

655 fps at 150yds.................................238fps at 300yds

34 ft/lbs at 150.....................................5ft/lbs at 300 shockedcamo.gif
0.49 second flight time at 150..................1.63 flight time at 300

So, that equivalent would be to come up 40 clicks at 150, but it would take 333 clicks up to hold zero at 300 yards!

WOW. I guess you must really know how to shoot biggrincamo.gif . Considering a 1mph wind change at 3 O'Clock would produce a 5.1 MOA shift, or 21 clicks.

Jerry

EDIT: please don't take this as sarcasm, I was just curious about the data.
Ronb
I have had way too much mountain dew to even think about that kind of math Jerry!

I have shot a 10-22 at 300 yds once, at a floating log in a small private lake. We were one a high bank overlooking the lake and I was pretty proud of myself for hitting the log about 50% of the time.
Not sure how big the log was...I could see it well enough with my scope on 12X
That was a long time ago..I doubt I could even see the log now.

Good Shootin

well I may have open a can of worms here but all I was trying to say was that shaw barrels shoot well (or maybe I'm just a lucky shot) don't know don't care I"m just out there to have fun. My chart that I worked up said it would drop 38.25 MOA ( 122.8") but it didn't
MY B.C. maybe right they maybe wrong, I was just trying to see what a .22 would do. Feel free to prove me wrong I don't care just have fun doing it and let me know how you do
I was not trying to sound like a sharpshooter (I was just saying a .22 will shoot that far) some days I can hit and some I can't but I have to say that my best group yet.
AS for the wind I had a 9:00 wind that was moving the leaves a bit ( I called it a 3-5 mph) and had to uses 4 MOA. For ammo all I shoot is CCI and Aguila I fill they put more time into there ammo and it groups best for me ( I don't like the snap, crack, pop, of rem. win. and fed.)
But remember in the end ER Shaw makes a darn good barrel but its only as good as the shooter and, ammo, that goes with it.
Happy shooting!!!!

No no, no can of worms. Just that inquiring minds want to know. I've never formally shot a .22LR past 50 yards and checked any group sizes. I mean, I have fired them at longer ranges under similar circumstances like what R7 described, and once killed a fox at 100 yds with my old 77/22 with a heart shot (lucky shot).

Anyway. My question is simply about the bullet drop. My scope (also a Leupold 3-9 EFR) is zero'd at 50 yards and without having ever tried, I don't know if it would even adjust to a 300 yard zero with that kind of drop? Maybe? I know the drop with the Eley subs in mine is approximately 12" at 100yds with the 50 yard zero.

I'm sure I speak for Jerry too when I say that derailing the thread was not our intent.
Jerry
Thanks Red, exactly what I'd like to say about the thread! Sorry about going way off topic here guys!

Youngbuck3006, I'm not going to say any more about any of it, I promise! biggrincamo.gif I was just curious about the data mostly, I am not doubting your skill at all. We are all here to have fun and learn at the same time. I'm not going to be the guy to step on toes! So, may I be the first to say: WELCOME TO THE VARMINTER FORUMS! Post up and have fun! Sorry if I got off to a rough start! There are a whole bunch of great guys (and a gal or two) on here.

Thanks,
Jerry B.

TJD
I wish not to high jack the topic. But shooting 22 rimfire long range is a whole lot of fun. No shooting of warm fuzzy critters at these ranges PLEASE. Steel targets are the way to go. The time of flight on targets past 200yds is cool. About the time you think you missed you hear the ping. So Cool.
Red
I'm going to have to try it.
youngbuck3006
well I will make one more post on this topic so I can leave everything straight Red and Jerry this was just simple talk for me so don't think that you have made me mad I love to talk about long range ballistic data as far as the drop goes it was 75 deg and I think the mirage was making the bullet float a little bit but I have not made it back to the range to see if this was the case. One thing I did note was that the bullets were diging 9" into the mud bank @ 300 yards but even with all this I would not make a shot at game at this range, there are just to many "what if " to think about. feel free to PM me if you would like to talk more.

longboard I hope you don't feel we stole you thead with all are long range B S, we just got a little carryed away
But as far as shaw barrels go the in side of mine looks like a mirror to the naked eye, also keep in mind that it helps if you clean them with a bore snake ( or rod) every third shot to brake them in.

Good luck

FWIW,

After finishing with the M/L at the range this evening, there were just a few minutes of light left. I dragged the Anschutz out and fired just two 5 shot groups at 100 yards. I managed a .55x" group and a 1.1xx" group. Each was about 6.75" low with a 50 yard zero using Wolf MT, which is less than I'd expected. Considering the low light conditions I'm fairly impressed. I need to try it again under better light and when I'm not rushed, might even stretch it out to 200
