Full Version: Can the Centurion 5mm Rimfire kill a Bobcat?
The Varminter Forums > The Varminter Forums > Predator Calling
Eric Mayer
Before anyone from California jumps in and tells me I am not allowed to shoot Bobcats at this time of year, let me say that this bobcat was killed under the authority of a landowner depredation permit due to the killing of livestock and I not only investigated the law, but I spoke to a DFG warden who confirmed my information.

Now, the details:

I shot this bobcat at approximately 25 yards with one shot to the neck using the Centurion 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum in a Remington 591. The bobcat was looking right at me. I aimed with my scope just below the chin on the throat. It killed the cat instantly.

The devastation from the 30jhp bullet was evident. The back of the neck and spine was shattered, with a hole the size of a golf ball in the thick "meat" portion.

I can say, without hesitation, that I will have no problems using this Centurion cartridge for predator hunting within 100 yards. As always, shot placement is imperative, but it is definitely enough for the job.

The bobcat weighed 25+ lbs and was quite long (approximately 48 inches extended paw to paw).

There is one more bobcat in the area that needs to be removed, so I may have another report soon.

Did you call the bobcat, or was it a chance encounter? Are you going to have it mounted?
Eric Mayer
We were looking for them and happened upon this one. It killed me to leave the fur, but it was slipping and I saw no sense in trying to get it tanned/mounted. Also, to quote the Fish & Game guy I spoke with, "Although you would be legal, you would probably be run out of any taxidermy shop without a tag on it."

Can't argue with that.

btw, I wish the landowner could wait another month before we kill the other one, but he just lost two more chickens and a kitten a couple of days ago. #2's got to go!

Tell me more about the 5MM Rem rimfire. Is it .22 caliber? Compare it to a .22 Mag. I'm interested. Thanks
Glen
timezoneguy-- Go to the top of any page here & click on "Articles". The 2nd article down is all about the 5MM. It is a .204 caliber rimfire.

If he knows of 2, there are probably more. Nice cat!

Good luck with #2.

I hope the landowner tells his friends. Sure would be nice to be the go-to guy for bobcat problems. smile.gif

(Nice kill, Eric.)

Nice cat, Eric. At 25 yrds, the 5mm was definitely effective.

I have a good lookin' bobcat on my property, I have only seen 2 or 3 since I have lived here. It is very discrete, and I only sight it in the early early morning. It is good size. biggrincamo.gif
