Billy
The spring morning of April 1775 broke with the fog and the smoke of battle still hanging in the air. Men went about the task of burying the dead and tending the wounded, ghost-like in appearance as they moved across the battlefield. The fighting the day before had been fierce; hand to hand in some instances. The victors wandered about in a daze, still in shock from the brutal violence thrust upon them the day before. America’s first victory in the battle for independence had been bitter sweet. Even though we had won the day and the enemy had been routed, many of our soldiers wept at the scene that unfolded around them. The bodies of family members and friends lay among the enemy dead. The wounded writhed in agony at the touch of those trying to help them. Thus was paid the first installment in the price of freedom for our fledgling country at the battle of Lexington and Concorde. This was the beginning a proud tradition that evolved to what we know today as the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
From those days until now, our citizens sleep peacefully, knowing that somewhere out there, Soldiers, Marines, Airmen and Sailors stand ready. My friend Staff Sergeant Brad Alexander can be counted as one of the best among that group of elite men wounded in battle.

In many conflicts throughout our country's history, a chosen few have taken up arms in the defense of our great nation and some like Brad gave more than the rest of us. All of us that served should be proud of that service and we should honor and mourn those that gave their lives for us. Most of all we should help our wounded struggling to cope with life after the battles have been fought. For them the battle is not yet over.

Brad Alexander was a scout with the fabled 101st Division in Iraq on a dismounted patrol in 2006 when a fanatical Muslim terrorist blew herself up. She not only took her own life but also the lives of several innocent children. Brad was badly burned in the attack, suffered horrible wounds over most of his body and he lost his left leg.

I met Brad on a duck hunt in November 2006. Brad was not a happy “camper” when I picked him up at BAMC. It was his first time out of the hospital and he was still in a lot of pain. To make matters worst his marriage was breaking up.....After the weekend Brad told me the HUNTS FOR HEROES duck hunt took him from the depth of depression to the pentacle of hope.

Brad became my military liaison at BAMC. For the past two years he has helped HUNTS FOR HEROES coordinate fishing trips and hunting trips with the WARRIOR TRANSITION BATTALION at BAMC.
During that time Red and I watched Brad grow during his recovery. We saw him when he took his first steps on his computerized leg. We were guests at his Purple Heart ceremony and all the time our friendship was growing.

HUNTS FOR HEROES is dedicated to the task of seeing that our wounded never be forgotten. We stand behind them grateful for the sacrifices they have made for us and mindful of all hardships they endure in the name of freedom. They are in our thoughts, our prayers and our hearts. Our support for them will always be strong and unwavering. Brad was medically discharged from the Army last month and will be going home to Puducka, Kentucky on June 12. .....Brad Alexander is the HUNTS FOR HEROES “HERO OF THE MONTH”.
