Mom's place in Northern Cali is crawling with the little buggers so my brother and I are going to meet up and try to put a dent in the population. He's using a .177 springer and I'll have my old RWS34 in .22. Looking forward to nailing my fair share of them. This has become a spring ritual for the two of us.

Sounds like fun. What part of Northern California are you in? Should be some good weather for squirrel shooting. Best of luck.

Well the weather in Shasta County was cold and rainy. I only bagged 5 of the bushy tailed rats. My brother left before there was any activity. Funny thing, I shot all but one on a cold dreary day. Guess they got hungry and had to come out regardless the weather. Got three breeders and two youngsters so all in all it wasn't a total wash. Didn't even put a dent in the population though. I'm going to go back down in a month, or two and give it another go.

The ground squirrel were actually behaving oddly for this time of year. On the only days that we saw sunshine and mild temperatures the squirrel failed to make an appearance. What few animals I shot were all taken in bad weather. In fact two were shot in the rain and the temperatures were unseasonably chilly. Bad weather, or not the sound of .22 caliber pellets solidly smacking furry critters made getting a bit soggy and chilled worth it all. As luck would have it the temperatures were back into the mid 70s to upper 80s a couple of days after I returned home. I generally have pretty good luck. Hopefully you'll do well on your trip.
