Hey guys, hope all is well. I was just thinking, for the norm, how many stands do ya'll do between coyote sightings? I think I have done 10 or so and I have called in two singles, both of which came in shortly after I started calling. I am new to calling coyotes and am just curious. I have a lot to learn. What are some things that ya'll picked up as you went along? Take it easy folks.

I would say your percentage for coyotes seen vs. the number of sets made is greatly dependant on what part of the country you live in and how many times you call the same spots throughout the year. Western or Northern portions of the US seem to have better calling success than Eastern or Southern portions.

I made three sets on Sunday and saw none. At times I can go for long periods and see none...10 sets or more even. Other times things turn around and might see two or three in one day in three or four sets. Just being there at the right time, being lucky is a big part IMO.

In my opinion there are alot of variables involved calling success percentage. how often the coyotes get called and how well they have been educated. near my home in central oregon some days i will go on several stands and see atleast one coyote on each stand. other days i get skunked. i believe that weather is also one of the largest factors involved. i think if i were to average out my success in the past 6 months my percentage would be around 1 in every 5 stands. but just like red said, sometimes it's ten sets or more in between seeing coyotes.

I do agree, that there are many variables in calling coyotes. IMHO, the civilized coyote as I like to refer to them. The ones that live in proximity to man have had a better education, and are harder to call. Granted there are some slow learners. I would say that coyotes here in Northern Illinois have some type of contact with man on a daily bases. If not just watching us from a distance.

I think weather has a lot to do with it but it is kinda like fishing, some days there bitting -some days there not.If you have a good day you can"t do anything wrong. This yr. in 2 days I called about 45 coyotes.on the Wyoming red desert,no I only got 12,they were in groups of 4+5 then I went 2wk. without one.

2-Blade,
If I'm lucky, it takes me about 3 years to see 45 coyotes and generally an entire season to kill 12, so I'm not feeling too sorry for you on the 2 week dry spell laugh.gif

I have made 14 stands since the first aprt of february and only had one coyote come in. I know they are there, cause there is fresh scat and tracks, just cant get them in. I call in an area that get lots of pressure so who knows how often those stands are being called? Ill just keep plugin away till I can get enough time to go to a spot I konw holds dogs and has little pressure. Good Luck to you all
