First error was in not setting the alarm clock properly so I woke up one hour late to get to the calling site at dawn. No biggy, I'll just get there when I get there. I got to the first spot after a long chilly ride on the quad and a vehicle is present, I assumed it's a deer hunter and went to spot #2. Turns out the beans are still in that field there and a slight rise in the terrain would not provide adequate visibility for any incoming customers. I moved to spot #3 and parked the quad way down wind and in a spot where I could walk from it without scenting up the area I expected any coyotes to be coming from. Placed the FoxPro on a round bail and quickly had a good set up with decent visibility and was relatively well hidden. A minute or two into the call when Mr. Coyote shows up at 350 yds at the edge of the timber. I'm sure that within just moments I'll be posing him for a photo and making him forever famous on the web. Just then, from the direction of the quad on the opposite side of the field, another coyote busts across the wide open field running at top speed and darts into the woods just feet away from the first one. Obviously the mate had been on the way in, passed the quad, and caught my scent. He watches her dive into the brush but is still somewhat interested in the dying rabbit noise. Hind sight is 20-20 and 350 yds with that rifle is not in my comfort zone but, at the time, I was not very confident he would commit to entering the field and exposing himself further so I steadied the 6lb CZ 204 on the shooting sticks and let rip with a full frontal shot. I saw the coyote go down and got audible confirmation of the 39 grainer finding its mark. Two seconds later he's up and in the woods in a blink of an eye. I found some tufts of white hair, some blood, some small pieces of meat, and multiple pieces of splintered bone fragments where the coyote went down. Tracked it as far as I could through the woods, there wasn't much blood, and spent some time just looking for the carcass. I must have hit him in the upper/inner shoulder or lower jaw? I'd hoped to get a photo to share, however, I'm pretty certain his rabbit chasing days and mischievous ways are over. Hope your day was better cool.gif

You gotta respect an animal tough enough to leave bone fragments behind and still get away. ph34r.gif

Any day off is a good day off. Coyotes are extremely tough animals, more so than most people believe. Still he's a goner now so good shot.

Red, that sounds like a series of misfortunate events. Maybe next time will be better but, that still sounds like a good time.
Bet you'll get some photos next time out. I'll be going in the am for some dogs. I hope to get some photos for the forums.
Later, Rocky

Hey it was a good day! I didn't mean to sound like I was complaining about a day off. I get out so seldom lately I'm probably a bit rusty. I called a few other spots with no sightings.

Good luck Rocky.
